When I looked more closely at this "2.4 million dollar" watch, noted to be on someone's wrist casually for 10 days, I thought it might be a redial (funky coronet, no "SWISS" or "SWISS MADE" below 6, extra space around subdials and substandard printing), so I wrote a comment. I didn't really expect them to allow it to be posted (as it might embarrass the wealthy owner, who may be friendly with the editors, who knows?), but still was hoping for some transparency. It's still not posted, several hours later, and don't expect it will be. But thought I'd mention something about it here.

Saw this one on Instagram and thought the same. If original, it is rather unsightly.

Here are four (or 1/3 of the total ref. 4113 pop.) others that I found. I do not know if any of them are original but they all look better than the one above. Though none are the same, all four examples below share the seconds/minute track inside of the telemeter inside of the tachymeter layout. Each one also has "Antimagnetique" or "Anti-magnetique" written on it and "closed" subdials. The print quality is also rather consistent. This is in contrast to the example above (as noted by Adam).

They were saying that it was a limited edition right?Only 12 watches were made?
Maybe they didn't sign them on purpose? Just a thought .

it is precisely for those flaws you have identified that it is a $2.4M watch, without those flaws it would be a $3M watch 😁

Even if I had the money/inclination and someone assured me it wasn't a redial I wouldn't buy it.

The quality of the text of "Telemetre" affects my brain like fingernails down a blackboard. Awful.

How would you be able to determine this for sure? Aren't most of the pieces used part of collections? Has he been found with buying redials before?

Best,

Thomas

Well perhaps the guy is perfectly aware this is a redial and paid a fair price for it (i.e. only 1 mio or so 😁). Given the fact that those watches were most likely given away or at least used by racing drivers most of them will have led a hard life which is shown by the quality of the dials of the other ones.

I'm not the expert Thomas, I certainly haven't said it is a redial or not. What I'm suggesting is would Hodinkee showcase a watch with a re- dial without acknowledging it?
They are the supposed experts.

This one is similar to the other examples, and also shows Swiss 6 Made

@DirtyDozen12 provided perfect examples of what a true dial should represent. I find it hard to believe that the OP photo would pass as 100% original. Scary! They are suppose to be the experts, but money changes all moral compasses eventually. I think this is the only place you will obtain the truth on any given wrist watch. Would be interesting to know what lies behind all of the "experts" at Hodinkee.

Best,

Thomas

To be fair, the Hodinkee reporter did not comment at all on the originality of the dial on the watch in question.

May I be pedantic and repost the following?
Can people please stop calling "journalists" the individuals who write in specialized watch magazines and blogs? Journalism rests upon seeking independent sources, avoiding or disclosing conflicts of interest, and citing sources -- all of that to produce reliable information.
As far as I know ZERO of the specialized publications come anywhere close to producing either journalism or trustworthy information.
(I'm assuming the term "reporter" here was used as a synonym of "journalist"?).

Well, I was using "reporter" in the generic sense, as in "reporting" that some rich bloke was wearing the same 4113 over a 10-day span. 😁

Not sure they deserve the same label as people risking their lives in conflict zones. 😒
"Writer" sounds more like it.
