That was a pretty glowing review. Maybe it's all true, but I don't put a lot of faith in reviews that have nothing negative to say at all. But I do hope it is as good as they say.

That is the discussion if someone who sells the stuff can/should review it? Personally I like reading that stuff, seeing the (often great) pictures and videos and that's it. It has never happened that a watch review has influenced my decision to buy something. That is always a mix of research and talking to other likeminded/knowledgeable people. Publications like Hodinkee are mainly "feel good" content for me and a welcomed distraction these days.

Buying a mechanical watch from any respectable brand is basically nothing dangerous (for your wallet maybe ; ) and should be a very personal decision and should be based on personal preference only. Do you like it on your wrist? Do you like the brand? Do you care about resell value or not at all? etc.

On another note: It took me forever to write these few lines because the page would always jump back to the ad so it is a lot of back and forth needed to post. Not the best user experience...

That isn't what I would call a review - more like a sales prospectus or a try-out for Omega's marketing team. Personally I find Hodinkee to be the least reliable, and least informative watch site. It reads like a magazine from the seatback on a commercial airline.

FWIW, the Week on the Wrist feature wasn't ever (that I've seen) intended as a "review;" none of them read like that—indeed, esp when they've covered stuff like vintage Monacos and Memovoxes. They're deliberations/considerations of a significant watch, treating it as an actual worn object rather than merely as a hype sinkhole. Depending on the author, these can be interesting/illuminating or navel-gazing/exhausting; I find Foster's writing strong enough (if a touch idiosyncratic) not to mind, but YMMV.

Although I'm a big fan of the Moonwatch, the repetitive re-editions and the slipping off of the model are slowly starting to annoy me.

I suppose so. But he talks about being ridiculed by his peers for being such a "gearhead" but then doesn't really talk about any real technical changes in the movement, other than co-axial and free spring balance, and a lot of talk about decoration level. All pretty obvious things to anyone paying a little bit of attention...

...well, everything is relative, so in Jack’s world, that is already quite technical.

Joking aside, Jack is really quite knowledgeable about technical aspects though, and in the end, it does not matter, because we have you, @Archer , for the in-depth discussions!! 👍

It’s a nice watch with a nice new bracelet, I still wish they’d go back to the old pre-quartz Omega logo for it (and for all of their branding) as I think it looks far more elegant but you can’t have everything.

Most watch reviews are useless. As consumers we need specs, pricing, good photos, and maybe a recap of what is new/different about the particular piece in question. The rest ends up being overly fawning or overly nitpicky, and boils down to personal preference anyway.

Personally I find Hodinkee to be the least reliable, and least informative watch site. It reads like a magazine from the seatback on a commercial airline.

😁 Spot on! Skymall for hipsters.

Fully agree. The modern applied logo looks wrong on a Speedmaster, it was my only complaint about the FOIS.

And yet the ‘dink both persists and prospers, evidencing that what we few here care about is really not the point.

Seems a bit like complaining of the lack of off-road tires on a Porsche

Perhaps people here are merely longing for the “good ‘ole days,” like back in 2013, when the creation of a new brand forum on Omegaforums.com would get picked up in Hodinkee coverage - and make “intrepid Zenith expert and UG enthusiast” @LouS internet famous

Sorry, Seiko boys: the world has changed 😉 - no ‘dink coverage for you

Chrono hand, Step dial and movement change make this the world's best speedy.
He truly did it justice.

I don't think that's the case so to speak. It has nothing to do with the good ole days, there are plenty of great watch sites that have meaningful content, which take an objective view about what they cover, including those that also sell stuff.

i think we’re in violent agreement?

my intended point was that:

in the “good ole days” Hodinkee was at first more like Fratello and the likes.

But for a long time now it is no longer what it was, but instead more what you describe - and quite successful at being the latter.

If you go to a world famous sushi restaurant and order the hamburger, it’s a weird thing to complain about incessantly “I can’t tell why everyone goes to this sushi place, their hamburger is terrible!”

I get that the analogy isn’t perfect because to a degree Hodinkee holds itself out as also having great hamburgers - but you’d think that in our circles we’d be done by now with complaining as though we’ve only just discovered moments ago that Hodinkee isn’t really a hamburger place.

Makes sense... although now I can’t figure out if I am hungry for sushi or a burger...😉

Like many things with this recent great shakeup of western society, mechanical watches as an industry and hobby have gone through a bit of a reset. For every WIS who is tired enough of Rolex shenanigans to give up the hobby, there are three more Hodinkee encouraged investment speculators. I think we’ve also seen some of this leak into Omega watch collecting recently.

It’s good to keep calling a spade a spade, such that new comers are informed about who’s producing meaningful content, and who is merely bowing to their investors with a never ending sales pitch.

Are we caught in a self-perpetuating, OF bubble that echos the same sentiment over and over again without outside influence - Hodinkee is bad?
Is this the general sentiment of all WIS?
What about the general public? Do they like Hodinkee?
I need to get out more and hear some other opinions. Who likes Hodinkee? What do they like about it?
Obviously someone really likes it and someone buys lots of stuff from them.
Me, my opinion? I haven’t gone to their site in months and I find them to be a cliche mouthpiece for major watch brands. A glowing review of the 3861 is no surprise - could it have ever been anything else with them?

This review was quite interesting, tough. It is fair to assume that there is less commercial interests involved when reviewing vintage, I guess.
