She was quite good, imo. I think one would need to nick-pick to consider her less than good. Hey, I think Hillary Clinton was a smart, extremely competent, confident candidate, and yet she lost (the electoral college).

why Kamala lost has been picked to death at this point, but in one of her initial speeches I remember turning to my wife and saying "this is everything democrats should have been saying- 4 years ago."

I don't know if you have seen the post campaign analysis of everything that went wrong but if you haven't, it's definitely worth reading. "All the Right things, Said too late" and "too little too late" are not the hallmarks of a good campaign.

For me that big moment is still the fall of the Berlin Wall.
That changes so much in Europe and the world.
Definitely bigger recent world events in our lifetime than the current events - in no particular order the fall of the Berlin Wall, 911, the Gulf Wars (debacle over WMD), Covid, Global Financial Crisis - other events?? I’d say in a decade much of the current events won’t have had a lasting impact. But then I’m in Europe.

I sure hope you are right, but unless the direction changes soon and dramatically this will take generations to recover from.

As a millennial aged American, the big events that I felt changed America were 9/11, GFC/Great Recession, and Covid.

I wish you were right too … only time will tell but right now I find it difficult not to worry.

The period is very grim from where I stand, and I do not enjoy seeing the democracy threatened, science denied - including in the USA - and the wars, tyrans and retrograd ideas thriving all over the world …
This all sounds especially mad when we are facing the need to change in so many ways to keep our planet a place the next generations - not mentioning the other species - can live on.

To go back to the US tariffs « policy » this just look like a big mistake to me that shows the madness of our times… there were surely some unbalance in the Previous situation but going all over the place, back and forth, bullying allies and « ennemies » the same way looks again crazy to me. The image of apprentice sorcerers playing with all the red buttons is not a comforting image. Tough to remain optimistic on what will emerge from this Chaos and the withdrawal of the US from multilateralism.

I am not an american citizen but those US election affect us all right now.

On a more positive note, I found some relief reading this thread so Thanks to OF to let this window open so far.

Serious question: what do you make of the MS13 tattoo stuff? Is it a clear photoshop that Trump insists is a real tattoo? I'd love to have genuine dialog on whether or not the current administration demands more loyalty or not, and I think this is a great starting point to potentially dive into a conversation on this.

You asked for links: interview at current time.

If you're not up on the MS13 tattoo story, feel free to do a bit of reading beyond this video but I suspect we're all aware of what this is referencing.

What do you believe?

Is the image clearly photoshopped?
Is there enough reasonable doubt to believe that the MS13 is photoshopped?
Do the knuckle tattoos clearly say MS13 as Trump asserts?

Let me know. Thank you.

EDIT: here is a better, more complete version of the interview and exactly what Trump said. video at current time. This one is much, much, more clear.

"Terry, Terry... no no...He had MS as clear as you can be, not interpreted. This is why people no longer believe, the news because it's fake news... Terry, he's got MS13 on his knuckles. It's such a disservice, why can't you just say yes, he does, and then go on to something else."
... little late on the reply to @ErichPryde here, but I do not believe that any reasonable person would say the photo that Donald Trump is referring to is not obviously photoshopped. Clear as day. There are many tells, but the easiest is that it is physically impossible for a finger tattoo to look like that.

When this photo get used people don't say the trump administration is claiming the symbols are code for MS13, the actual M S 1 3 letters and numbers were added to this photo to demonstrate that claim.

What's the symbols are said to represent, by those familiar with tattoo's is that they mean; Smoke Weed, Get High, love God, till you die.

To me, the former seems like a stretch. The latter seems probable.

The sudden and drastic cuts to science and research along with the sudden and arbitrary canceling of student visas is guaranteed to have a long lasting impact. It would take generations to reverse and has given China a victory that can have effects world wide.

The claims about the symbols meaning MS13 started on social media. That's where with photoshopped image comes from. However during the interview it strongly came across that Trump believes it to be a real picture. He really seems to to think that both the symbols and the words/letters are tattooed on that guys hand.

Much as I want to resist offering any input, she was mediocre at best and surrounded be some of the worst advisors ever. On tv in Australia I remember seeing she had been endorsed by Liz and Dick Cheney and was doing a tour with one of them and wondering who is that going to motivate?

Which Trump voters are sitting there going "Well I'm not down for any of her policies but if the guy who mistook his hunting buddy's face for a pheasant thinks she's cool count me in", and which Democrats are going to be energised by having the Iraq war guy on their side?

It'd be like an Australian candidate saying "Hey we got Eddie McGuire on our side, go Collingwood"
Probably one of the worst US presidential candidates I can recall. She did OK during scripted interviews and when a teleprompter was present, but anything off-script her behavior often deteriorated in to incoherent rambling and irrelevant anecdotes. Sometimes incapable of answering even basic questions. It was pretty discouraging to watch and I genuinely felt embarrassed for the Democrats. They had a chance to start fresh and fumbled so hard that no amount of campaign money, media + celebrity support could save them, even against Trump.

Two things can be true at the same time. I do think that Harris is smart and competent (as shown over her entire career), but she was not a good presidential candidate for many of the reasons already mentioned (not charismatic, flubbed important questions, etc.).

Just wait until the average American figures out they're the ones being taxed 145% on very large selection of goods they could previously afford.

And they removed that loophole for individual consumer purchases under $800, which I think will speed up the process of impacting the average person.

https://www.rollingstone.com/politi...arding-supplies-trade-war-tariffs-1235329235/

"Two Trump administration officials and a Trump aide tell Rolling Stone that they have done some stockpiling of their own in recent weeks or months, and that they know others working in Republican politics — inside and outside of the administration — who are doing the same. One of the Trump officials says they have already run to Target to bulk-buy toilet paper, some types of food, and other household supplies."

There's posts in here (including my own) ripping in to Kamala and the Democrat campaign. Please try to at least have a civilzed discussion instead of being so childish.

In fact, I welcome a variety of well-thought-out opinions (like @Trev 's).

I’m a live and let live kinda person, but I agree I don’t think this is the appropriate place to share sexual fantasies.
