Hey, let's agree that dollar cost averaging is a good strategy and get back to talking about watches. 😜

No worries. Those charts are accurate as far as they go, and selling the "bottom" of an index like SPY or Q is pretty much always a bad idea. Which is exactly why reversals can happen quickly and well before the news flow shifts positive.
I don’t think we are anywhere near the bottom. This administration is actively creating global chaos. We are at month 4 out of 48. I’m sitting the fυck out of this shit show till end of year.

Here’s my solution to 31% Swiss tariffs. Fly to Japan, have a wonderful weekend and pick up your wrist bling there. My wife approved this plan. I get laid, I get udon, I get watch. I dare anyone comes up with a better plan!!!

Into indexes yes. Perhaps not individual names.

Watches- much more pleasant to talk about. Here's a shot of a seamaster at the beach.

I agree DCA was an excellent strategy. It is kind of ironic that this all starts when I have finally commited to following through and buying that Rolex I’ve been threatening to for so long. This whole thing could actually be my fault.

I agree, nowhere near it. That was just a generalized statement. Now we need a watch picture from you.

This thread is also timely because of Watches and Wonders 2025 going on right now. Manufacturers still working hard. Rolex breaking out of their box in a big way. It's got to be stressful for watch companies. As watch lovers we want them to succeed. Fingers crossed.

Why do we assume that used watches imported into America from countries with the new tariffs will not also be included?

Are people assuming that? They surely will be included.

They only focus on physical goods for a reason. If the Trump administration included services, they would show a trade surplus with places like Canada, and any information that doesn’t fit their narrative is ignored.
Trump will start to notice pretty soon. Canadians are stopping travel to the US in great amounts such that airlines are dropping flights to US destinations. I am implementing my own travel embargo and so are most Canucks that I speak with. One friend is also selling his Florida condo, and I hear he is not alone. Of course he will say we are nasty and the services imbalance is huge in Canada's favour.
Sorry folks, but no US OF purchases for me until this gets resolved.
Maybe Canadians will be able to buy a new Omega for significantly less that Americans. 👍

It's not just the tariffs that will increase costs for 'muricans, it's also the USD conversion rate, which is dropping from a high. The goal is to drop it further.

Hard to imagine that all this plus a declining stock market and declining tourism will have no impact on luxury goods purchased in the USA. I think the US is the biggest Porsche market too. Tightening markets have a way of spiraling and taking on a life of their own.

I see good things ahead for the vintage Hamilton market. 😁
With this curve, eventually I will be able to bring my watch pocket money over and clean out your collections for you.😉 (May take a swerve on the Hammys)

I'm very surprised about the sudden confusion/ outrage/uncertainty here and in general. Loooong before any election the political direction was clear and published by Republicans. It's called " Project 2025 " . The old authoritarian Playbook. Gets implemented now. That is the Start . From here it gets much worse. Just read it. And the dissolving of the Federal Education ministry and many others , will make things worse in the long run. Good to watch from far away. I pitty the USA and all fingers are crossed for my American Friends.

Forgot the pictures to show off Australia's state of urgency / Calm / interest in politics ...

Since this is a watch forum I think it's best to avoid getting too political (the rolex forum seems to be banning discussion of the tarriffs at all), but I certainly am not at all surprised at any of this, including the tariffs. I even stocked up on champagne after the election, since I figured tariffs were on the way. This was a campaign promise.

I’m on rennlist and it’s a meltdown over there. I have a 992.2 base allocation that was approved last week the day Trump announced his auto tariffs. Right now I’m totally fvcked on my Porsche order.
That’s heartbreaking. Sorry to hear mate.

Deleted a couple of purely political posts, we can’t avoid tariff discussion really as it’s relevant to know what’s going on, I’m still trying to work out if it applies to vintage watches shipped from here as I’ve got two I’m planning on letting go later this year. Not sure if it applies at all to used goods, and if it comes from Australia but is Swiss, does it get 10% or 31%.

Incidentally from an actual transaction perspective, if anyone from the US buys from oversees and does get hit with a bill, that will be on you and not something to blame the seller for. The same has always applied to Europeans and VAT or Australians and GST, the importer pays and can’t really complain about it after the fact as you’re expected to know your own country’s rules.

I am glad to hear it. But do not some (most?) US state have sales tax? That is what VAT is, no? Granted it is usually rated rather lower than is normal in Europe but is that not the case? Maybe that doesn't apply where you are.

What I think is equally ridiculous is that US sales tax isn't levied at a Federal rather than state level. Though it does allow the US government to completely overlook it when shouting about iniquity elsewhere of course. Reciprocal tariffs my arse.
Our states are larger than many countries in terms of size and GDP. A US sales tax would never fly. Importing goods to the US is dirt cheap vs what happens to a shipment to UK / EU. The inequities in the trade relationship between the US and other countries is well documented. That said, the way all this is being managed is a S..t Show.
