A piece I had considered and all tidy including the movement, case back unmarked but why put the date inside?
Anyone seen anything like it before?

 

I guess it's better than on the outside of the case back.

Very odd Stuart; is that a production date (OVD puts it to 1946)? I have seen service dates etched into casebacks, but this is too early for service...puzzling indeed. Hopefully someone will come up with an answer!
