I’m on my way home from a week’s vacation exploring Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. Yesterday afternoon, on the last day of the trip, I happened upon this:

Sorry for the unsteady, grainy video, but what you see here is an adult female (I think) grizzly bear. I estimate that she probably weighs about 500 pounds. I was only about 75 yards away and had there not been a deep ravine between us, I would have been even more intimidated than I already was. When I sighted her in my binoculars, she looked right at me. So I shot this 20 second video and got the hell out of there! An adrenaline rush and a once in a lifetime experience.

She looks like she's thinking about that ravine too, but for different reasons.

Pretty cool.

I had bear spray as does most everyone there, but you wonder whether it really works. I hope to never have to find out.

Bearspray on a grizzly is better than nothing but it usully won't have much effect on a determined grizzly.

Impressive & unique experience, & good fortune to be able to catch a recording, too.

Black bear in my backyard, central Redmond WA, about 5 minutes walk from downtown...

Bear spray can be hit or miss. Best to just give them your watch and credit cards.

The next time a bear tries to steal your porridge, just grab him by the nuts, look him square in the eyes and ask him who the daddy is.
