I know some balances are interchangeable between some movements, but did Omega change the hairspring designs also? I know some balances were either screw or smooth design, but only thinking about screw models (don't have any smooth balances to check). Google check of a sample (smooth and screw) have a BPH of 18,000 Can you swap the hairspring from a 283 to a 30T2 even if you can't use the balance in the other movement? DON
Here is the list of balances compatible with the cal. 283: http://cgi.julesborel.com/cgi-bin/matcgi2?ref=[^[D^HY Here is the list of balances compatible with the cal. 30T2. http://cgi.julesborel.com/cgi-bin/matcgi2?ref=[^[D[K\ No overlap. Not that either are available for purchase anyway. gatorcpa
This is the complete balance including staff which vary, too. Can we even buy Omega hairsprings alone? I have never seen them.
Not that I've ever seen. But I have seen replacement balance wheels with hairsprings for sale on eBay. These sometimes have the name of a generic maker like Ronda on them. http://www.ebay.ie/itm/351419401490Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network Hope this helps, gatorcpa
Where's Al when you need him. I have hairsprings alone new in package from "watchmaker estates". No wheels or staffs. Bulova, elgin, etc, but never Omega
As mentioned in the original post Hairsprings only Since the balances are 18,000 BPH. Can you swap a hairspring from a 283 onto the balance of a 30T2? DON
My BESTFIT Encyclopedia cross reference says the hairspring will fit. Collars are the same size. Staffs are different. One is non-incashock and the other is incashock so the complete balances will not interchange. Best guess since both are 18,000 BPH that it should work.
there are a few on the bay.........http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121662805012?ssPageName=STRK:MESINDXX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1436.l2649Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network . but remember, not everything is interchangeable ...... kind regards. achim
I don't know of any documentation available from Omega that would allow you to check if a balance spring from one balance can be used on another. They may be the same beat rate and may look the same but the devil is in the details. If the geometry of the collet, stud, where the spring is in relation to the regulating pins is correct it's a start. But it doesn't end there. The mass and inertia of the two balance wheels would have to be the same. If they aren't the springs would be different CGS numbers. You could start by accurately measuring the balance wheels to see if they are the same, so outside diameter, thickness and width of the rim, etc. If everything looks the same, then pop the spring off one balance, press it on the other balance, install it in the watch, and see what the performance is like. If you are lucky you might just need to add or remove weight from the balance wheel.
