So my Dad actually gave this to me last week. I believe that he has had this day date since late 70s or early 80s.

I have always suspected that it was fake as the story is sketchy AF. apparently his old business associate wanted to give him a watch and this is what he ended up with.

I posted it in Rolex forum and folks there seem to agree on real head, fake band. I don't have the tool to open the back, but why would it have a fake band? It seems to work still, although I can't change the date/day (I'm assuming one click inside of setting time? I don't have that click) and I Believe that it has never been serviced.

Fake, real Rolex 18K gold watches are made of gold, not plated steel with the plating peeling off

Agree that the bracelet is fake. Nothing is peeling off of the watch itself and has a noticeably different texture than the bracelet.

The dial says
Sigma t Swiss t sigma.
Doesn't the sigma indicate gold dial? Clearly not the case here

Ps: I'm not a Rolex expert

Take it to a Rolex Boutique.

If you get it back it's real.

Sigma indicates the dial or dial markers are gold. Here they are diamonds.....

head looks good, down to the brushing on the lugs. The bracelet is crap, guy probably cheaped out on that part, which is fine because its a gold rolex. I really want to say the dial is an aftermarket replacement but it could be an original as well, it looks spot on. Lets get a movement pic!

I don't have the tool/die to open the back of rolex, anyone have a suggestion on how to open it?

also, anyone have a suggestion on where to get a nice leather strap, that is, if the head is real.

Get a watchmaker to open it and check out the movement, he'll be able to sell you a strap too if its real

Nice leather strap + more toned-down dial = pretty great looking watch!

Re. leather straps, the world is your Oyster (geddit? geddit?), there are millions of options. Do a Google search for "Rolex Day-date on leather strap" and a number of great combos come up...
