Hey evryone, looking into buying this watch. Listed as ref 2635/5 and as an 18ct solid gold bezel. I don't see any markings in the caseback suggesting that gold status though, very difficult to find this particular model through a google search too. Anyone familiar? Thanks

Worn crown and average condition movement. Lugs gold capped. Since the bezel matches in colour. Betting its not 18kt and not solid gold.

I would pass

Makes sense. Is the worn crown the reason for the missing Omega logo?

Crown is worn down with age, not an uncommon thing to see on those crowns as they have a thin shell of gold that is very soft and end up being worn daily for half a century

Ahhh okay, I thought it was just a replacement. To be honest I'd rather have the old worn down crown than a replacement anyway.

It probably is a replacement, its hard to tell given what's left really

Yeah true, I guess when a watch is 75ish years old you just never know. Does the dial look authentic to you? Literally not been able to find even one direct match on a Google reverse search.

compare OP watch to this one
Lots of info readily available here on OF if you look

edit: time to find this on search - 30 sec

better sometimes to search for the reference number, Google lens does not always work.
Also searching on Advanced Search here on OF is good- try it out

This is a gold-capped watch, not solid gold. The bezel isn't 18k gold, it's all gold-plated. This one seems rough around the edges imo I would look for a better example unless it's priced well.

Just on the price, I did negotiate the seller down a bit, got him to 590 dollars but that was as low as he was willing to go. He did say he just had it serviced as well.

I think that the crown may be both a replacement and also worn down. Otherwise, the watch looks legit to me. It's possible that the bezel is solid gold, but I don't think you should count on it. And TBH, unless your plan is to scrap the case, it really doesn't matter much. I doubt that the watch was serviced. Overall, it probably comes down to your personal taste and how much you like it. It's not the worst example I've seen, but for various reasons, I'm not finding it terribly appealing.

Yeah I'd definitely agree with what you're saying. He did mention it's serviced recently but since I haven't progressed with the purchase yet I haven't seen any proof of service.

Based on what I can see there: That is probably too high of a price by almost 2x. I also don't believe it was recently serviced (or at least, serviced WELL) based on those pictures. I do a bad job of watch servicing, and mine all leave looking better/cleaner than that 😁

Dial + hands aren't particularly attractive condition either. IMO, unless you're absolutely in love with this, I'd say pass.

Thanks for the advice, very helpful as always. What would you think of a price of about 580-590 dollars for this piece

Thanks mate, appreciate the input. I do quite like the slightly unique configuration of the dial with the printed numerals and applied indices, and I also think that shade of gold also looks cool despite not generally being a fan of gold. But I'm certainly not minded to rush into anything, there's a lot of options.

Just to help you out

Gold cap, gold filled and gold plate. This is Gold Capped which is a thicker layer of gold (vs. Gold filled) and bonded to steel with heat and pressure.

Gold filled is also applied, but on brass under heat and pressure

Gold plate is a thin layer of gold applied electronically. Listed in microns although some are thick layer. Some Chinese companies do 1 micron (doesn’t last very long)

Thanks mate, I actually just came upon a post on this forum addressing exactly that and everything mentioned about gold capped, seems to be exactly with this watch is. So I'd hazard a guess that this is probably gold capped.
