The sub mentioned earlier looked a good deal to me. Papers no issue. As long as the seller agreed, put it into a RSC for a service quote (no obligation to actually service). That will tell you whether original/ stolen etc. Takes all of 2 days.....

Am sure your dad will love the 116234 however. A lovely watch.

Well ... bummer.

I'm a mere "non-diver" who never "dives with dive watches." Guess there will be no more enjoying the ol' Zodiac Sea Wolf for what it is, for the watch community might say I'm an idiot if I wear it as a time piece or, horror of horrors, simply because I like it.

I'm also old enough to recall that lots of dive watches and "diver-styled wanna-be" watches were being worn 40 years ago by all sorts rather than only divers. Why would the watch community, which currently "considers some timepiece that is all the rage," do an about-face and "will one day realize" that only non-diving idiots commit the faux pas of wearing dive watches?

It is just dreadful how idiots have come to have such a lack of a sense of proportion these days.

The maximum speed limit to be found in this state is 85 mph. Only an idiot would be seen owning and driving an exotic sports car that will do 185 mph.

White tail deer are the largest game animal to be hunted in this region. Only an idiot would be seen punching holes in target paper with a rifle appropriate for the African "Big Five" at the gun club range.

I appreciate Verdulken's story and applaud his choice of watch as a nice gift for his father who should proudly wear it even if he is a desk-diving accountant.

I get it ... I'm totally freaking out over this. I've been a recreational diver for 25 years, but now that I live in a landlocked state, diving is just an occasional vacation activity for me, and I don't dive with my vintage watches anyway. I'm not even sure they could pass a pressure test. What should I do with them? I'm embarrassed to wear them now, and I certainly don't want to post any more photos to WRUW.

Something related to the this discussion here popped in my newsfeed today and thought I'd share here. Not sure how technically sound it is but I do agree with the first reasoning author gives: "buy and wear whatever you damn please!"

https://gearpatrol.com/2018/10/20/why-dive-watches-work/

Joking aside, I agree that vintage dive watches make good daily-wearers. They're designed to be robust and highly visible, and often retain more water resistance than other vintage watches. Yes, they were originally over-designed and over-built for casual use, but if we're talking about vintage pieces that have been retired from their professional life, then daily-wear is a very reasonable way to give them a second life, and I don't know why someone would be critical of it.

True confessions ...

Last week I did that which was evil and wore a vintage alarm watch with no intention to utilize the alarm feature.

Worse and worse! I have been guilty of wearing a Speedmaster without once utilizing the unique timing features it affords, but rather only consulting it for the time.

I'm hoping we'll get to hear back from Verdulken to learn how his father likes the new watch gift.

I'll definitely post if he liked it (he better! lol), his bd is next month. Meantime here's a shot of my Speedmaster doing nothing but posing and giving me the time at work. Cheers!

So gave the watch to my dad for his BD and he loved it!, the bracelet was a little big for his aging wrist but he totally loved it. Thanks again guys for the kind comments. And here's a pic of it after he opened it. Cheers!

Is your dad a diver? No? Boat captain? Negative? Get him An Explorer. The online watch community will one day realize a non-diver wearing a dive watch says you are an idiot. There are a billion different watches out there, and dive watches (especially the Submariner) isn't and was never designed to be worn as jewelry to enhance your image. Get him a watch that actually matches who he is.

I think this may be the thinking behind the current Rolex strategy, i.e. limiting sale of dive watches to divers who actually dive with them. Which explains why there are none for sale apparently. Also to buy a Seadweller you now need a sat diver ticket.

Just an update and background story. So the reason I was looking for a sub for my dad is because I believed he used to have one back in the day and had to sell at one point (part of the $$ he used to help me with college), well he did have a Rolex he sold but it was not a sub but a reference 1501 he bought new in 1982. And how do I know the reference and year? because my dad kept the sales receipt even after he sold it. Anyhow so I ended up buying him a new 116234 with blue dial and roman numerals for his birthday after inquiring what he likes on a watch. I'm sure he will like it.

Again, thanks all for the help!

Awesome! 😀

Nice work, the datejust is well specced. Yes, that was a fair price for a 16610, even sweeter if you could knock off a couple hundred bucks. Nice find and happy holidays OP. Love the speedy too by the way!
