i have an old 1953 caliber 354 seamaster chronometer that works fine but hasn't been serviced in probably 20 years and has been in a drawer most of that time.

Two high end jewelers in town have told me I need to send it to Omega. One even told me "wear it until it breaks and then send it to Omega". I can't afford the $1100 that omegas site says it will cost.

Any ideas of what I should try next? I can't seem to find any independent watchmakers in the Minneapolis area.

You're right. Here's a list in the area (rather broad area) you can start contacting. Find one that you're comfortable with and has good reviews. You'll be mailing it but it should still be cheaper than Omega.
