I bought this vintage 18k solid gold IWC Cal 89 off eBay but I'm not sure of its authenticity and would appreciate all the help I can get with this piece. Here's a link of the piece: https://www.ebay.com.sg/itm/282250477121Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network

Already sold. Dial and movement appear to be original, but Don (below) is correct – aftermarket case.

Dial and movement are original, but recased in a non authentic case

Not marked and doesn't have the proper gold markings as follows

Tony C. said it - it's an aftermarket case, probably made in the country it was shipped to. That's fairly common, especially in some areas like South America. Otherwise a nice catch.

Thanks for the pointers!! By the way would it be difficult to find an original casing?

It is most likely in the original casing. It's just that the movement was shipped by IWC to another country to save on customs, then fitted to a locally made gold case.

Hallmark looks South American to me, possibly Argentina.

Very common from the 1940's through the 1960's.

Reference the cal. 89. This was a workhorse for IWC from the 40's into the 70's. Hand winding of course. The quartz thing that caused so many Swiss houses to fold or merge trying to stay alive, did it to IWC and their in-house movements. Cal. 89. I own a pristine IWC with the 89. Mine dates from the mid 60's.

It's a beautiful IWC even with the case re-cased.
