Help with Constellation 14393 61 SC

Hey all, I'm looking to buy my first vintage watch but really don't know exactly what to look for on how to verify if this watch I'm looking at is legit and if any major parts were replaced. Any chance anyone can help? This is regarding a OMEGA Constellation 14393 61 SC Pie Pan Dial Cal.561 Silver Dial

Can anyone let me know if it's legit and then what major flaws this watch might show that I should be aware of now (and in future searches) as well as what a good estimate would be for this particular watch.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to OF @Alchemist-NYC
The pics provided aren’t really good enough to assess the watch properly and they have been over exposed to hide any flaws the watch has.

In principle the watch looks genuine.
But as a critique:
The case is soft
The dial has bubbling
The crown is an incorrect replacement
The movt looks to have been harshly cleaned and has a replacement rotor.
And IMHO the aftermarket cyclops replacement crystal is hideous.
I think the marks around the 8 index might be on the crystal but can’t be sure.

In saying all that - The arrowhead dial variant of the 14393 is reasonably uncommon, so whether the watch is still worth buying will come down to price and tolerance for a less than perfect watch.

It’s much easier if you tell us the asking price rather than trying to give a ball park figure.

It is quite common to see the color of the rotor is different from the rest of the movement. I don't know if the rotor was replaced or just because parts of movement come from different supplier. Of course, the movement needs a proper service.
The marks at 8 are on the crystal, not the dial.
The crown is not correct for this model.
The case was polished (a common thing for vintage watches from Japan) but IMO it is not too bad since we still see the line on the bezel and the joints where the lug meet the case are not flat.
The dial has small bubbles (another common thing for vintage watches from Japan).

Apologies for the delay in response, I've been away on vacation but thank you so much for your time and opinion!! It's very much appreciated!

I believe they were asking for~$1,500 USD. The arrowhead indices is the reason why I was attracted to this watch but I wanted to ensure that the watch was authentic and in a condition worth the price. My biggest worry is that the movement looks very dark and the condition of the case.

Do you believe that with the soft case and the condition of the movement that it has the potential to be worn for years to come?

Service and cleaning would probably be the first thing I do if I ended up buying this watch. (Replacement crystal too if possible). But I'm just curious to know whether this watch will last for years to come despite the flaws. What stresses me out is the soft case, the color of the movement, as well as the dial.

It's my first vintage watch so I'm looking to learn more as well as make sure that it's set to last me a while. Also the watch I do believe is coming from Japan

It surely will last longer than all of us if you take care of it properly

Think the dial or color of the movement pose any concerns to the longevity of the time piece? Like, will major components NEED to be replaced or will that dial need a change eventually too? Or you think care is enough to make it last despite some flaws

The watch is legit, the rest is your decision.

  • The dial may degrade further, whether it "needs" to be replaced is a matter of aesthetics and your personal choice.
  • The case is polished, which means that the original shape of the case has been degraded (e.g. the sharp edges). This is also a cosmetic issue, and one for you to decide.
  • Nobody can tell you whether parts of the movement will need replacement. Buying an unserviced vintage watch without a warranty carries some risk. Sometimes you get lucky and the watch needs only a simple service. Other times there are hundreds of dollars of extra repairs. Even a basic service is expensive, especially if you don't have a regular watchmaker to go to. If you're looking for a sure thing with a warranty and without additional unknown costs, you might consider buying a new watch in a vintage style.
  • As for price, that is also for you to decide, based on your access to watches, your budget, and whether you're willing to hunt patiently for months or if you would like a watch right away. If you ultimately decide that the watch is not right for you, the condition isn't satisfactory, or you don't want to pay for repairs, you will take a significant loss when you sell it.

Many collectors, like those on the forum will simply say that they are not interested in this watch at all because of the condition, and the price is too high for them. But these are people who already own dozens (or hundreds) of watches, so they have different standards and are only interested in excellent watches and bargains.

Thanks for the depth, it's exactly what I was looking for. I may ponder it a while longer, i love the indices and the watch overall but I just question if the price is right considering the various flaws it has. As long as it will last me years without costing me over $2.5-$3k i think I would love to own one of these

The photos are overexposed so the actual condition seems worse, the price is a bit high but it depends on your preferences. Good luck.

My $0.02. You have picked a watch with a great vintage design that’s very attractive. Challenges with this particular one already noted above.

I would on principle not buy a watch where the actual condition can’t be determined much more clearly. The photos hide the condition (deliberately?) and it could be a big disappointment compared to what you’re expecting.

Your budget strikes me as solid, so I’d suggest you keep looking. These are not super difficult to find.

Not delibererately. This is a watch from the japanese dealer closer who takes pictures of every watch the same way. It's just been sold for $ 1.853. It was in my watch list. So maybe the OP took the big plunge.

I decided against this particular watch. Someone snagged it before me, but I figured with everyone else's feedback and with some more knowledge now, I decided to wait for a bit and keep searching. Thanks everyone! Always appreciate the assistance 🙏🏽
