Help to assess a 2998-2

Hey!

I'm considering going for this 2998-2 I find quite appealing despite it having had a full life. From what I can see and compare with moonwatch only examples, it's all original but the later crown. Case looks polished but is it too much?
It's quite filthy but I'm wondering if there is a hidden gem beneath that dirt 😀 The base 1000 insert has sort of an inner ring of dirt!
What do you think? 😀

Yes it looks very clean, very similar to the one displayed in moonwatch only. Same first 4# on the serial too 😀

Well, for the curious it went at 14200€+ 25%, so roughly 17700€. Comes with a 1035/516 too

I had set an automatic bid at 14k so, once again, I end up being the underbidder at an auction! ::facepalm1:::whipped:

It was sold for 17600 € / 19200 $ including the premium.

A bit curious how you assessed the watch?
Please do share??

Well, I pulled my moo watch only book and checked everything was original (except the crown) and matched the auction house’s description. Then I compared the condition to similar examples from past sales, checked the price charts on speedmaster101, added 1-1.5k for the undisclosed bracelet that was coming with it and that’s about it 😀

most of all, it was attractive to me with a nice honest untampered feeling and I think it would have cleaned very well especially the base1000 😀

Sounds familiar. I have put almost the same amount in as an automatic bid. Great minds… fail alike. This time. 🙁

Quite ok price. The last excellent Tachy 1000 bezel, I sold a few years ago, fetched Euro 6,400.00 .

What a beautiful watch. That movement looks incredible.

My previous response was a bit brief, a few small elaborations as to why I think this watch was certainly worth its price:

The good:
- This which seems honest in every respect. Dirty on the outside, consistent signs of wear, yet clean movement.
- Dial body colour and printing seem perfectly in tact.
- Hands seem original, correct length and curved as they should be.
- This watch was auctioned by a rather regional and small auction house, certainly not specialised in watches and clearly not prepared for sale. At the same time; good pictures and an external expert who's described the watch and clearly has knowledge of MWO. It allegedly came from the first owner, and I have no reason to doubt that based on what I'm seeing.
- Bonus: came with a later 1035/506 bracelet. Whilst not original to this watch, it never hurts to have one of those at hand.

The bad:
- The lume is a little dirty and seems a bit shoddily applied, particularly on the 9 and 10 o'clock indices.
- Case is indeed a little polished, but try and find a 2998 that is not... Good luck. It makes it almost a bonus, if it wasn't for the scratched up caseback. I hate those dummy marks. The pics above don't show the caseback; it's not dreadful, the hippocampus is visible and the double beveled edge remains, yet there are some opening marks on the side.
- This one is a bit of an assumption; the serial sits in the right range for a 2998-2, but is only a few numbers apart from another 2998-2 I've seen with one of our esteemed members here. That one failed to get an Extract due to a gap in the Archives. As much as I am convinced the serial is correct, I wouldn't be surprised if this one fails to get an EoA too (if that service resumes in its previous form, that is).

The ugly:
- The crown is a later service replacement, wrong diameter. But easy fix.

And of course, the ugliest part is not winning the auction. I'll just keep saving up. 😁

The watch is very unusual, since it had the base 1000 and the correct hands.
These do very seldom come up on auctions these days.

A base 1000 in a very nice condition was recently sold for 4700 € at an auction (I think to a Forumfriend!).

A one owner (family) watch.
And no dealer messing with the watch!
The condition of the dial was very nice, and the lume plots were acceptable.
A lovely and correct movement.
It was the condition of the case that made me unsure,
It looked very polished, but here is the problem, how much polishing could I/we accept?

There are some threads and sales here on the Forum showing amazing 2998:s, and these would of course be much more valuable.

With the price payed, and following Speedmaster101:s chart, this one would be a bit under Good (Good = 22100 € /24000 $)

I do think that the person who won the watch got it at a fair price!
