Today I was attracted by the charming dual tone dial Zenith Pilot and placed order to the private seller. While giving I'm very un-familar w/ Zenith I hope I can get some advise on this item about if it's genuine and what's its market value so I can understand how much I over-paid, Impulse is devil.
It looks all correct to me, very nice. You have one of the best automatic movement of the ‘70s. I don’t know about the price, forget and enjoy your watch
Thanks, I saw another item on ebay that all case is brushed and claimed as all original, wonder if this one is over polished...
The brushing and polishing on the case back and case look correct to me. I have a Surf EP 3019 and a manual wind C-shape 2542 from the same era as yours. One of them pristine and one that someone polished. Yours looks excellent and from the peak of old-school Swiss watchmaking before the Zenith Radio and TV company ran the business into the ground. They made a come-back in the 80's but the late-60's and early 70's was a classic era.
Zenith watches have become a hot commodity over the past couple of years. Especially ones that are in excellent condition, or have interesting dials. Yours checks both of these boxes. Enjoy.
I don't know for sure but it may be due to the date window, so they omitted the other 3 corresponding markers for balance. With no remenants on the markers, I would suspect it is a design element.
I just sent Zenith an email about some information of this watch, hopefully they can give me the answer.
I have looked at lots of old Zenith dials since you posed your question and the missing llume at 12, 3, 6 and 9 is extremely common on watches from this era. Even on my EP surf from 1973.
A lovely watch @SurvivingJoe, well done! Rossler dates this model 2572 PC E to 1974., but my guess it maybe 1978? Perhaps the last in-house 2572. My reason being on your back-case it probably states 382 instead of the normal code of 380 for a 2572 PC., not clear in your pics, perhaps you could confirm. (The difference is the Kif Trior) Thanks Martin
Per Zenith: 1. The engraving in the case back the ref NO. should be 01-0020-382 from 70s. 2. The dial should be a ‘bleu dégradé centre gris’ (gradient blue grey center). Unfortunately I didn't get more useful information from Zenith unless I request "Extract from the Zenith Registers" and "Certificate of Origin". I figured it's not worthy to do so for this time piece as well as no SN on case nor movement... The power serve of this watch is <24h(swing 203 degree) which is low so I sent it to my watch maker for maintainece. There's not much wear of this movement but swing is not improved much after service. After a bit work on the spring by watch maker it's improved to 31h(~251 degree). Probably it's due to aging of the spring...
