·Horological Hivemind:
It’s taken me years to get my bearings in this hobby and for my tastes to develop and mellow with greater knowledge and experience. But I’m beginning to feel like I finally know what’s out there and what I like. And to settle upon a collection strategy of sorts.
I think I’d like to organize a collection around the concept of materials. That is, one watch each in a range of case metals/materials. I’m already on my way. This appeals to the science nerd in me.
I want a fair amount of diversity in complications, styles, eras, etc, too, but such variability matters less than the material thing.
I tend to go for uncommon/limited pieces—I don’t feel any compulsion to cover the “standards.” All that really matters is that I like it. Any brand, macro or micro.
Here’s what I’m thinking:
Steel: my Rio Seamaster 300pro
White gold: my Aqua Terra 150m
Yellow/rose gold: an incoming 1956 IWC dress watch
Plastic/synthetic: my Garmin instinct
Platinum?
Titanium?
Ceramic?
Curious if folks have any suggestions. I don’t have a GMT or chronograph at the moment, and am tempted to pick up the new Timex titanium GMT that I posted about recently—it’s sharp, and could fill a niche for travel/beater. And there are plenty of ceramic Speedies out there to choose from. Platinum would likely be a culminating purchase years from now… maybe a preowned DayDate 36, though I’ve sort of sworn off Rolex.
