Help Identifying Unbranded German Quartz Watch

Hello all! First time here, hoping someone can help identify a watch that belonged to my grandfather.

There is no brand shown anywhere — only the words Quartz and W. GERMAN MOVT.

I had it looked at by a local watch repair shop, but they were unable to find any identifying marks inside, either.

Some notes:
  • Movement: German Quartz
  • Case: Round, gold-colored, 32mm diameter
  • Dial: White with black Roman numerals
  • Hands: Thin, black hour and minute hands, gold-colored seconds hand
  • Complications: Moon phase (below 12 o'clock), Date window (at 6 o'clock)
  • Additional Features: Compass ring and Tachymetre around the outside edge of the dial
  • Crystal: Flat
  • Strap: Leather with hidden or covered spring bars (can't see any sign of them). This isn't the original leather strap, as that was falling apart.
  • Case Back: No markings

It was most likely purchased in New York City (where my grandfather lived at the time). This was given to me by my dad nearly 20 years ago, and only recently resurfaced. As my dad and his dad have both passed, this is all I have to go on.

The combination of a moon phase complication and a compass ring in a quartz watch from this era (1980s or earlier) seems to be unusual based on what I've been able to find on my own.

Any insights, suggestions, or possible identifications would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your help figuring out the history/provenance!

It is difficult to tell you anything without seeing the mechanism (movement) in the case. As to the watch being “made” in Germany? Could be, but you’ll need to show us the movement before we can be sure. With no name identifying the source company for the watch, it appears to be a typical generic watch assembled from off the shelf components by a company who didn’t make any part of the watch! I’m not certain what current legislation exists that specifies how much of a watch has to be Swiss, to be called Swiss made. (Or German.) But a watch may have Hong Kong case, Taiwanese hands, Strap from India, movement from Japan, marketed by an American company. But if it meets minimum content, it can be called Japanese. (Or U S made.) Please get back to us with a picture of the movement.
