Hello, this is my first post here so let me introduce myself shortly. My name is Steffen and I live in Germany. I’m a speedy fan for a long time now but never bought a vintage one.
Im normally active in the German watch forums since I collect several brand.

But now I’m interested in a specific vintage Speedy and need the help from pros.
I found this Speedy and would say from the Moonwatch book it should be from 1981 from the number even if the case back has a short Q. The short Q should come after 1983 mentioned in the book but I saw several watches with short Q with similar numbers.

    What do you think?
And would you also date it to 1981?
Thanks a lot for your opinions. I think the Dial is nice but the bezel isn’t. Price is below 3000€.

Whether it's precisely from '81 or not can only be clarified with an extract from the archives. Are you looking for a birthyear watch?

Yes, I’m looking for a birth year watch ;)

The list says 1981 numbers startet with 44.121 but yes I’m afraid only an extract get the truth.
But the pity is that i have to do the extract after i bought it because at the moment the watch comes without it of course.
So I try to minimize the risk of a bad deal in the case it’s from 1980 and not 81.

It's not a so bad deal, no matter what serial list you are referring to. :) It might just not be a 1981, as said, only Omega knows by now. Case looks good, dial has charme. Factor in that it will need a service ( NOT by Omega, find a good watchmaker) and 120 CHF for the Extract. But if you really want a 1981, then keep searching.

.and I forgot. Never underestimate the beauty of a unpolished case.

Or you could buy it and get the extract of archives and if it turns out not to be a 1981, flip it.
The movements were not used in anything like the exact order they were produced. They're good for a general estimate within 2-3 years.

Thanks for the replies so far.
Your just more common to vintage Speedys, what do you think about the bezel?
The Dial is very good i think, the case as well, the hands are ok but the bezel....

But of course, if you say the watch is fine and in a nice used shape I can go for it and get an extract.
Like I said I just want to a avoid that the watch isn’t from 81 AND is poor or not authentic.

I like it. It's well used, has dings which I prefer a lot over polished to death, authentic. The bezel matches the overall condition etc..the main question though is, and that I can't answer: does it speak to you, do you like what you see? Even if it turns out to be a 1980 or 1982?

I recently bought this banged up '76 and it's a pleasure to wear and look at. A great daily wearer and you are never afraid of wearing it on any accasion.

Even if you end up selling it because it’s not 1981 - I think soon there will be a large market for sales listings for 1980s Speedmasters with Extracts as people from the 1980s look for birth-year watches.
