My guess is that dial is OK and the crystal is scratched. The scratches may polish out with a little Polywatch (do a search).

The current price is very good for any Rolex, but I doubt it will stay that low.

Good luck,

I don’t know if you can see but there is smudging around the oyster. Just wondering what would have caused that moisture? Add also reads it’s linked short and original links aren’t available. Yes the crystal is scratched. I see the value of these all over the place. What do you think would be a top bid that would make sense if you were not Looking to keep it but sell it in effort to move up to a grail watch. I figuring an expensive in the mix.

So your asking us to value the watch for you, so you can flip it and make some quick money? ::facepalm1::

As many time as I read the OP’s posts in this thread, I am still not certain exactly what the questions are! 😕

I’m not here to help you make money.

However, here is a blow up of the dial.

I don’t see any issue with the word “Oyster”, but you can clearly see the scratch on the crystal.

No not really I am thinking of getting it. I haven’t bid or anything but yes I own a Cellini and a couple things I am planning on selling to get a speedy. I know

in a way yes but it’s really related me obtaining a speedy. I don’t buy and sell watches just buy but I have a Cellini I want to sell and I’m looking for a few other things to sell for the specific Speedmaster. Often I will but a watch with the thought of doing it but keep it. Recently got a nice Tag which I know aren’t great and I was going to sell it for my speedy fund. Actually I already got an offer on my Cellini. I’m just trying to find a way to buy a new omega pissing my wife in the most minimal way. So yes I am asking about your opinion on condition and price. But if I were to bid I would keep it to sell, trade for an omega. If that is a bad thing to ask here I didn’t know, honestly I have about twenty to 25 watches and I am fixated on getting my grail although owning this Rolex would not be a bad thing, I have my Cellini but it’s gold and never wear it. So I’m considering bidding either to own or to trade up but I like to consult with people who know as to be honest I made a poor decisions buying my Cellini. If this is improper I shall delete the post but it wasn’t about me hustling

And I am curious about what would cause that smudging on the lettering. Believe me I am a watch lover this week I got an omega I started a thread about, it was my first one although I’ll admit it’s still in the mail, I found a good deal on a constellation that you guys helped me with as I can’t really determine when I’m paying too much yet but I got two used Vostoks for fifty bucks and I know that’s good

That will most likely sell for FMV. Good luck with a quick flip.
Ya the bumper I missed sold for a little under fmv and I was upset I missed the deadline. It wasn’t special but I wanted it in my collection. What would fmv be on a watch in this condition. It’s actually Mens 34mm as well and I like midsize. I’d actually prefer this over my Cellini and the Cellini is gold

Flippers are tolerated but not appreciated - they’re essentially raising the price for everyone in the hobby (not to say I haven’t made money on watch sales in the past).

For me, if you’re planning on doing a pure flip, don’t ask others here to do the work/provide the expertise for you. Not trying to be sanctimonious, but this thread is a bit cynical....

Ok I was not looking to start anything. This is just an auction near my house and I was considering getting it to use to either keep or trade up for my grail speedy. I didn’t know it would create an issue. I’m not looking to make money on this for any other reason than to move up to the watch I want so could a moderator delete this or lock it whatever. The guys here helped me with a watch I’m buying for myself so I didn’t see it as a big deal in this case I would prefer to shut down the whole thread or I’ll go back and figure out how to delete mine. Last thing I want is controversy on a watch thread, I have enough real life controversy I’m new so if someone could ask a mod to delete the whole thing I’d be grateful. This was merely me trying to work up to a Speedmaster sorry

By the way I’m a bit bummed as I rely on experienced guys to help me with omega purchases I make for myself and they did help me.

We don’t do that here.

The point of your post is well taken. It is unfortunate that some don’t care for your means to accomplish an end, but it is what it is. Everyone is entitled to an opinion regardless of what others think.

The fact remains that you have actually helped the hobby by allowing us to show the difference between a dial scratch and a crystal scratch.

That may help someone else one day. So we will leave this alone.

Back to the watch, FWIW the dial doesn't seem 100% correct to me. The rail dial ...the "-" markers enclosing "DATE" is unusual (update: seen some other examples like this, probably not unusual). The index markers crowding the coronet, and just generally something about the lume relative to the markers, and relative to the T SWISS T looks off. As does the weight and application of all the lettering.

Not being able to find a credible example of another '74 Date that shares these peculiarities doesn't inspire confidence. Anyway - just do your homework on this one before jumping in. Oh, and remember to factor in auction fees.

Rolex made a lot of variants, so the following example is by no means definitive. Just a lot more in line with what I would expect to see from a '74 Date.

The auction fees are like 15% then there is tax, getting the thing serviced and the fear that I will fall for it and be unable to part with it. Now on another estate sale they had a nice looking bumper which ended at a reasonable price. As far as this thing goes i May let it pass as there is much more to take into consideration than just the price. I really did think that scratch was infact messed up lettering. Strange. So I’d guess it may go up to 1,500 or so. Funny I never even knew about this site until my wife was bidding on a copper vase for plants and I was looking at what was going an omega was listed in the same lot. I didn’t bid on it I figured I’ll wait till the last day but by the time I got to it the auction had ended. Some items truly go for good deals but not so much the two watches I’ve come across

@Walrus , some friendly advise- the only people that actually make money at this game are those who have experience buying low and selling high-they know what they are looking at instantly and have the means and knowledge to service and sell.
This is akin to day-trading in the stock market, you may get lucky occasionally, but the pro’s always know what to buy and will have bought it before you get half way into the first google search.
I advise you just be patient and save your money as you can squirrel it away in preparation of finding your grail. You won’t find it on eBay, or on an auction site-you will find it here, in the classified’s, from a reputable dealer that will actually have a conversation with you about it and make sure you get exactly what you want.
The slow money way is always the best way imo.

Ya thanks and I’m in the stock market and am a buy and hold type of guy. It is easy to get ahead of yourself, at least in my case. I will say along with thinking of using the watch towards a speedy I do like it and on the off chance I could get it for a grand I would be happy. Probably service it and hold it but I made the decision I’m leaving it at that. I’ve never dealt with an estate sale prior so it propbaly isn’t a wise idea. I appreciate the advice and have had to heed it numerous times in life after learning the hard way
