hello everyone, recently i began searching for a vintage seamaster sm300 and found one from a seemly seasoned member from timezone. i've purchased the following watch:

    http://forums.timezone.com/index.php?t=tree&goto=6400400&rid=0

i know the sec hand is not the right one but is there anything else wrong with this watch? hope i didn't make a mistake buying this but i really wanted a vintage sm300.

thank you for all your advice!

Dial and hands look like modern replacements. The real experts will be along in a minute....

Only looked quickly on my phone but the dial and hands look like they are original. Possibility of having been relumed. The caseback has been polished but overall the case looks ok. Bezel looks nice too. For the price I think you did good. These watches have been going up in value over the past few years (as have most nice vintage omegas).

How do you tell the difference between replacement and relume?

T- swiss made -T dial can only be vintage in this watch plus in one of the side views you can see a tiny bit of age on the dial. I've also seen some well preserved vintage omegas where the tritium still glows a bit - the lume here though looks very clean and intact same with the hands though I've seen those too.

    My observations:
From comparison to my small database, the "3" in 300 does not look right.
Nor does the middle section of the "3" match the watches I have here. Much shorter.
Hour marker lume, to my eye, looks too puffy and smooth like luminova.
No sandy, grainy, appearance of aged tritium.
I don't know if there were tritium service dials, if there are, this may be one.
Bezel (not insert necessarily), has zero wear on it, looks brand new.

Just got home and am looking at the pictures closely and have problems with the watch - pitpro's comments are well taken and the dial now that I'm looking at it on my 27 inch monitor looks like a modern replacement dial with the two "T"s added on. The swiss made fonts are also more consistent with the modern replacement dial than with the vintage ones.

The movement serial also looks too early to me - I haven't been following the sm300s closely but this seems too early from what I've seen. Besides, the caseback as its written is what is typically seen with the later sm300s as the earlier sm300s with the twisted lugs typically had the -63 or -64 appended to the case reference number.
As it turns out this may not have been the bargain it seemed to be.

Now, interest in SM 300 is gathering momentum albeit slowly and it is to be expected, some of the not so kosher examples will be seen on the market.

We need people like you and also, other informed enthusiasts and experts in this forum, to advise people like us, so that we do land up with a miserable example.

All that glitters is not gold.

    Thank-you.

all good. if you send yor SM 300 to omega for a service and dial fresh-up, you get exactly this dial and these hands.(here they will be from watchco in melbourne, i`d say...) nice watch, enjoy it. you can actually read it in the dark......that`s a plus ! kind regards. achim

Fair price.....but I agree with (MSN) not a bargain. If I owned this watch I would add the correct secounds hand, replace the bezel with a watchco....and by no means your at a loss as the watch would be worth upwards to 2800 ........IMO

Here's an eBay listing from Watchadoo
Watchco currently has no 165.024 dial listed but the 166.024 looks very similar.
Only one thing, no T's on either.

    thank you everyone!

i'm ok with replacement dials as long as it's genuine omega. so after reading everyone's comments i'm still not 100% sure if everything is kosher omega other than the second hand...

Outside of the secound hand....... I would think all is Omega//Just a little mis-matched.

actually, i should have a used second hand. and if i find it, you can have it for free, if you pay for registered postage.
