··Melbourne AustraliaWay way back, when I was in the military, I only had one watch and would wear it every day, sometimes 24/7.
Then, as a civvy I accumulated a few different watches and got into the habit of selecting one each morning to wear to work.
If I knew I'd be in the office all day, it'd be a dress watch, a nice Seamaster, Rolex Airking etc.
Quite often I'd have to go down to the shipyard so I'd select a "beater", often my Speedmaster, but also a selection of Seikos and if I knew it might involve crawling through half finished compartments it would be one of my Casio F91-W "emergency" pieces.
Then came retirement.
Not having to get up early and figure out what to wear, what watch to select etc I got back into the habit of using the "standard watch". A Citizen titanium/GPS/Solar thing that told me the time, never needed winding and was extremely accurate.
The only time I'd change my watch from then on was if we were going out to lunch/dinner/concert or to visit friends, I'd then choose whatever suited my mood at the time.
I remember being invited to lunch in the city, and one of the group was a lady who was fixated on how much people earned and what their car cost etc etc, so I wore my Subbie, and shamelessly allowed it to show below my cuff as I knew her eagle eyes would spot it.
"Hey, you've got a new watch! How much did it cost?"
"Oh, about 12k" I replied offhandedly.
"Bullshit!" was the scorning reply, I just smiled and shrugged.
A few minutes later as we moved around the table to chat, I noticed one of the other men from the group whispering in her shell pink.
You should have seen her eyes, they almost popped out. Made my day.
Other events, like a classical concert, would require a nice subdued dress watch.
AND THEN COVID HIT!
No more going out. No more lunches/dinners/concerts. Just the same isolation in varying degrees of boredom.
It was because of that, I reverted back to the "one watch" regime, my trusty old Citizen.
Now that things are easing and "going out" and "travel" is becoming increasingly normalised, I still find myself grabbing old faithful.
I wonder if I will go back to the old "pick a watch today".
What about you?
