Have you ever purchased the same watch but in a different color?

Been there, done that.

Had a Blue wave dial SMP chronograph at the same time as a black dial (sold black first, then blue just a few weeks ago). Had a Rolex 40mm Polar Explorer II and black dial at the same time, as well as the 42mm Polar Explorer II while I owned the other two. I bought an Orthos Commander 300 in black and then picked up a blue, which I then gave to my brother 6 months later. I briefly had both an Omega Speedmaster X-33 Skywalker and the Solar Impulse LE together for 3 months before I gave the Skywalker to my son. I had a Rolex Submariner black with no date and green Hulk with date for the past year, until a few weeks ago when I traded the no date towards a Sea Dweller.

Currently I have a Speedmaster Pro with white Italian dial, one with Mitsukoshi dial, the Speedy Tuesday with reverse panda dial, and two with a standard black dial. I have three Victorinox Dive Master 500 in stainless and black dial, PVD and black dial, and PVD with red dial. Have a Luminox Atacama chronograph with black dial and one with blue sunburst dial. I have a Seiko PADI Turtle and the Blue Lagoon Turtle that differ in dial and bezel. Blah Blah Blah.

It's perfectly normal. Do it.

Same same but different

I know they should tell the same time but then what would be the point of having two of them

Yes, I have an SKX 009 and I just purchased a SKX007 as they are out of production.

I also might have an ST2 and a 145.022-76.

I'm such a loser I have bought multiples of exactly the same watch. I actually have 10 examples of one particular Longines.
