As I get older and the roof loses more and more thatch, I’ve come to value the virtues of a really good hat or two. Now, being a resident of North East Scotland, sun protection is not really an issue, so it’s mainly less pleasant weather conditions that call them into play.

After some trial and error, I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m not a baseball cap kind of guy. Beanies/knitted caps don’t suit me either (though I appreciate their ear warming qualities). These two are my go-to headwear.

For cold, wet weather, on the left is a foldaway oiled Barmah hat. For cold dry weather, on the right, it’s a Kangol wool flat cap. And yes, I know I’ll never rock a Kangol as well as Mr. Jackson

So, what do other members favour when headgear is called for????

I wear an Adidas originals bucket hat on holiday, my wife hates it and dreams that I will loose it. I have one of those newspaper boy caps for the winter but as it does not get cold in Malawi I never use it.

The Happy Mondays were/are one of my all time favourite bands. Read Bez by Bez a while back, never going to win any prizes for literature but a nice read for looking back on those days.

I often wear U.S. Navy ship ball caps...but only ships that I was detached to during deployment that I flew on and off of...pictured below was my last ship, the USS R.M. Davis which is an FFG (guided missile frigate)...

I could only find one photo of me in a hat and it's at least two beards ago ...

these days, with the encroaching hair-hole, I do favour the flat cap.

    Very nice hats @Mouse_at_Large!

I don't really do hats unless I'm playing a bit of 'geetar' at a country & Western gig. On those occasions I tend to opt for a dodgy leather job with a wide brim.

Also, I can't remember seeing my Dad ever wear a hat. However, when he worked for Cadogan Tate at Christies auction warehouse, (in London) during the 80's and 90's, some of Madonna's famous lingerie was put into a charity auction. My Dad couldn't miss the opportunity to model one of those fancy pointed bras. This is probably my favourite picture of my 'dear old Dad', and of course his lovely old Omega Speedmaster 105.012-65 was the perfect accessory.:D

Most of the time I wear ball caps, though if I’m going to be out in the sun for a while I wear something with a decent brim.

I wish I still had the nice Stetson flat cap that I received from the Mother-in-law a few years ago, but alas it has disappeared.

And my part-time job requires something a little more formal.

I don't wear hats all that much when I do it's usually a ball cap. If it's real cold outside zero"f" a watch cap. From time to time I'll wear a cowboy hat when I'm horse back riding. I have a few dress hats that keep the rain off my head in rainy weather. Plus I have a couple Elmer Fudd caps that I may wear while hunting depends how cold it's outside.

I swear by my Tilley Airflow. Given the time I spend on the water it’s mission critical.

Those Elmer Fudd caps rock...I was issued one by the Cincinnati Police Department when I worked patrol from 2004 to 2006...unfortunately, I had to give it back to the department when I resigned. :(

Old hats. They only last so long and then what do you do with them? They do make a really nice, if damned expensive, planter.

and its likely the only Snell approved planter on the planet!
