Amazing…
Googled a couple of pictures, and found this lovely one!
And you had the view!!

😁
Lol- oh no, that’s the view from the rooftop of one of the $$$$ houses on Capitol Hill who was kind enough to let us park on their roof for the fireworks display. My view is a stone wall in a basement.

I have decided we’re grilling hot dogs and taking pictures with some of these American flags my wife hauled back from Walmart. I may even make everyone listen to me read the Declaration of Independence. I am an American and it’s high time my kids became more painfully aware of it.

The fact that you have flags purchased from Walmart has already told them that 😉

Oh, and when you read the Bill of Rights, make sure they hear beyond the first sentences- there’s some good nuance in there.

Went to the tallmadge house in litchfeild today. Mr. Washington would not have won the war without his amazing spy network. I have a great book about the spy ring wasn’t fully understood until our era it was kept so secret. I made an attempt to get the book out of storage but failed. No watches either for that matter. All good things in all good time.

Oh yes and Yale does a public reading of the Declaration of Independence and Fredrick Douglas response. It’s kinda cool like a thousand people show up and people are actually calm and listen minus a few pro hamas supporters trying to ruin it for everyone. Fredrick Douglas was very interesting also the first African American to run for president. Probably would have made a good one.

Douglass stated that the nation's founders were great men for their ideals of freedom. But in doing so he brings awareness to the hypocrisy of their ideals by the existence of slavery on American soil. Douglass continues to interrogate the meaning of the Declaration of Independence, to enslaved African Americans experiencing grave inequality and injustice:

“Fellow-citizens, pardon me, allow me to ask, why am I called upon to speak here to-day? What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? Are the great principles of political freedom and of natural justice, embodied in that Declaration of Independence, extended to us? and am I, therefore, called upon to bring our humble offering to the national altar, and to confess the benefits and express devout gratitude for the blessings resulting from your independence to us?”

There is a big difference between American politics and the American people. I have yet to meet one of those cartoonish Americans we hear about in the media and this forums members weakens that image further. I wish you all a pleasant hangover in the morning.

I think it’s like that most places in the world. I recall my first trip to China I was amazed how openly friendly everyone was to me. When I asked about it they just said” we love America and it’s people, it’s the governments that cause the problems.” That was repeated in a number of Asian countries. There are idiots everywhere but the world is mostly full of people just tryin to live and catch some happiness here and there. I might need to get a Rolex as a hardcore Rolex collector I know told me happiness can only be achieved via Rolex, not relationships. Wtf I’ll give it a try if I can.

I’ve met many- they are here. But the majority of them are capable of having a rational conversation one on one despite differing political views- we share more in common on a human level (we all poop, we all breathe air, we all want to be loved).

People just want to feel heard and accepted. Politicians are masters at manipulating that and play to people’s base emotions to whip up mob mentality.

A person is intelligent, people are stupid.

Thanks to the half dozen posters above, as a politically interested Brit I found your comments informative. It is easy to become scared by the media we receive forgetting that bad news sells. If you could just reassure me that the leader of the free world after your forthcoming election will keep us all safe I would be extremely grateful.

Oh and please don’t let us descend into arguing and name calling as often happens when a thread has political overtones. Keep the mods happy!

You have. Don't let JW's humble responses fool you -- his building is the fanciest, most expensive one on Capitol Hill. He's living the dream up there. He even has a large security staff to keep the unwashed masses from trying to rub elbows with him 😁

I don’t know if keeping the world “ safe” is ever completely possible but it’s in no one’s interest to see WW3 break out hopefully we can all just chill a bit as things do feel tense but I think every generation has said that and proclaimed the end is nigh

Would this be the book, Walrus?

We have a copy of this one. Quite an engaging narrative!
