Celebrating Canada's birthday, and my wedding anniversary as well. And yes we picked this date for a couple of reasons - always get the day off to spend together, and I won't ever forget what day to celebrate it on! Watched Milos "The Missile" win at Wimbledon this morning, about to have some lunch then head to a local park with the dogs for some time in the sun. Contrary to the rest of the week so far the weather today is cooperating, so currently 19 C and mostly sunny. Have a good one!
Thanks guys - great day so far taking the pups for a walk in the local park that was packed with people and activities. Had to find a spot away from everyone to snap a pic because the dog on my right here is a bit of a nut case with people... Just had some dinner and now relaxing with a few drinks. Cheers, Al
I like to celebrate Canada Day by posting a picture of my favorite Canadian singer. And no, it's not Geddy Lee: Happy Canada Day to Shania and all our friends north of the border! gatorcpa
My fiddle group and I entertained at our local Heritage Park. We played on the verandah of the Famous Five residence (Nellie McClung, Emily Murphy et al of the emancipation for women) for an hour, then to the gazebo at the residence (see image), then we participated in a 45-minute parade around the park (imagine 9 fiddlers on a 1919 open air Waltham bus followed by four strolling fiddlers). THAT was a challenge for those of us who walked. Lunch, then back to the gazebo for another hour. The image shows some of our group in the gazebo, and me playing outside. Fun, but tiring! Dinner out with the family, then collapse into my favourite chair.
Thirteen fiddle players all going at once, that'd be good to hear. What sort of music? Country/Folk? And I can see the guy outside the gazebo has the heel tapping goin' Great way to celebrate your National Day!
Polkas, jigs, reels, schottiches, waltzes, some country, a bit of schmaltz, a lot of Canadian fiddle tunes, regional ones from other provinces, that sort of stuff. It's fun! At Heritage Park, we often play on the steam train that circles the park, the stern wheeler (the Moyie) which paddles around the reservoir, the band shell, the verandah of the Wainwright Hotel, and we jam on street corners. NEVER again on the Ferris wheel, however! Wherever there's a crowd. Though, today the park was so busy, we had to change our routine. That's me on the left, walking behind the Waltham bus. The Calgary Stampede is (reportedly) the richest rodeo in the world. It starts this week, this is our busiest time of year. I belong to two fiddle groups. We do parades, private parties, banquets, rodeos, round ups (on local ranches), conventions, bar-b-cues, you name it. We have stuff going on practically every day for the next two weeks!
I was wearing a Seiko 7N43-9011 which I got for free. Rain was in the forecast (didn't happen), and I was playing my Yamaha fiddle with $35.00 fibreglass bow. No sense damaging good equipment in a gig such as this.
