I live in the UK and recently bought something from Poland that was advertised as "VAT included". After shipment I saw that UPS was charging me an import fee. I asked the seller about this and they said that the price included Polish VAT but I still had to pay UK import taxes. My thought here is that I shouldn't have been subject to Polish/EU VAT in the first place since I'm not in the EU, and therefore the listing was misleading. Am I in the wrong or misunderstanding?

Definitely you should not have paid VAT, but wrong to assume that this was cleared by customs, mainly Amazon and Ebay do that.

I'm not really following the second part of your statement. What assumption are you referring to? I understand why I owe the import fee, and that's fine. My problem is with paying taxes in both places. The way I see it, either the seller charged me EU taxes incorrectly, or they misleadingly advertised taxes being included in the price.

You should not have paid VAT period, seller was misleading. I guess you actually did not pay VAT if this was an auction or a private seller.

Because of the need for an international passport (Euro 70.00 per person valid for 5 years) lots of people will renounce their yearly Christmas shopping trip to London, with Amsterdam, Paris & Berlin becoming alternatives...
Seems to me that people who go shopping in foreign countries have the means to have a valid passport, no matter what the foreign country is.

As for how Brexit has impacted my buying habits, I have stopped buying watches and straps from the UK. I did bid on one watch I really liked but had to factor in those import tax costs and lost the bid to @cchen as a result. 😡

Ironically my three most significant watch purchases last year were from the UK, I’m kind of glad I loaded up before those borders went up. This thread is missing some pictures.

Well, here's some news:
In Belgium 4000 school children won't make it to London as their schools have chosen Berlin or Paris as alternative school trip destinations
They have the means to buy a valid passport, no matter what the foreign country is, but not to use it for a single foreign school trip....

what does that mean?
Not sure how much you pay for a passport in the country where you live, but the tax stamp required in France is 86 euros to get one passport and for most normal people that is a big sum of money. For people of modest means it’s a huge sum to pay for one school trip.
But those are not the same people as the jet setters who go “shopping” in a foreign country.

And There is no passport needed to travel to Germany or France from Belgium, it’s all part of the Schengen zone and a valid government issued ID is sufficient.

Last year they couldn’t go to school so Berlin or Paris isn’t bad.

Amazing news item... meanwhile noticing the guy wore two wristwatches
.

Sadly, this isn't an exaggeration... this is from Friday's news

"One in six unable to buy essential food items due to shortages, research finds
Around one in six adults in Britain have been unable to buy essential food items in the last fortnight, figures suggest.

Some 17% of adults said they had not been able to purchase such goods because they were not available, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Almost a quarter (23%) said the same for non-essential food items."

https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/news/on...l-095719877.html?soc_src=social-sh&soc_trk=ma

It certainly what we are finding in our food shopping. We've also had construction work done to our house this year & the labour and materials shortages started to get really insane.

Any watch item I want to buy pretty much has to be already in the UK for me to bother even looking now.

Hope things does get worst for Christmas when demand ramp up!

It's not just the UK. or a Brexit issue, here in the US turkeys and Christmas trees are going to be in short supply this year. And same for Christmas toys which are floating offshore and can't clear the ports. Kitchen appliances or cars, forget it. The world is now short staffed, help wanted signs are ignored. Supply chains are messed up.

Here in Ireland, Amazon.co.uk is the only english website i trust to buy items from, as they sort out the taxes for you.

Had a few items at the start of the year, where customs were wanting extra charges, despite companies already charging me UK VAT, Refuse to pay it twice, so had them returned to their sender.

I am in the UK and haven't bought anything from overseas since Brexit, so apologies if I am asking basic questions here.

Importing used watches from anywhere, I assume that I am looking at 20% VAT.

But I also assume that many places have domestic taxes on used items that are not payable when the goods are being exported.

Is there any resource for checking the imported cost for items from different countries?

Interesting Brexit impact on entering Spain through Gibraltar (and crossing back and forth to go diving) has been the extra scrutiny of my passport, and the stamping of said passport.

They stamped it each and every time I crossed the border... and in the two weeks I've been here, have filled two pages.

I was also made to get out of the vehicle each time (unlike the Spanish and Belgian divers I was with) and go into the office.

When I asked if this was entirely necessary after the 5th time, the guy shrugged and said "you voted for this". Which I didn't, but I suppose I see what he means.

Brexit: the gift that keeps on taking.

Remainers will always blame Leavers. And Leavers will blame anyone but themselves.

Not seen any shortages because of Brexit.
Lots of Remoaners blaming anything they can think of!
If something unwelcome happens it's Brexit that caused it, if something positive happens it's despite Brexit.
