It's a machined surface (guilloché) in a waffle pattern but what is the material?

oddly enough, the consistently ugliest part of all those watches is the RGM logo...

looks like taken from the sign of the muffler shop down the street......

The demonstration brass blank that Roland etched a pattern into is in my miscellaneous box somewhere. Very cool!
