Gmt Master Or Submariner In 18k Solid Gold?

Respectable Members

All denominators being equal and both are in 18k solid gold, which is the better buy, a Rolex GMT Master model reference 1675 (with crown-guard) or a Rolex Submariner model reference 1680.

As for the Submariner in 18k solid gold, what color dial will, in the long run, be highly desirable.

Thank-you.

Really sorry to say this but as a dedicated and committed vintage Rolex sports lover, I really couldn't wear either.. :-(
Sorry.

My personal favorite would be the 18K blue 1680 with a rainbow colourchange dial

And a pink unicorn hide strap! The dial is mother of pearl, and has real gemstones in it - called the Serti dial IIRC.

(ps - the unicorn hide strap was not included with those originally)

You know what I mean, the 1680 metallic blue dials are unstable and start to fade from blue to purple to bronze 😜

Yes, I know what you meant - was just having fun.

And knowing your famous mailmen you'd probably like this one better:

Sub is probably the more popular choice between the two and the more desirable model. Both are great watches though. I also tend to see more black 1680s than blue.

Actually, I haven't seen one come up for sale lately...and they are not cheap either! 🙁 Another nice 1675 but without crownguards and arrow hands:

They're called alpha hands, and that's better than Mercedes hands too in my book.

Yep, forgot the name of them for a moment. You should get one of these GMTs! 😉

I know those 40 mm Oyster cases fit me well already. Don't think I want a tool in solid gold though, whether it's a hammer or a watch. 😜

Every time you wear your Vacheron or 2799, that's a tool in solid gold

That's a dress watch mate. By definition, it's an accessory to be made of precious metal. 😉

..... although by the strictest definition there should be no second hand. 😵‍💫

The tool isn't the watch, its the owner of the wrist lol

Respectable Member dsio and also, other respectable participants

I appreciate your input.

I shall ask my friend to personally visit a local reputable vintage-watch dealer and see for himself, whether he prefers the GMT Master or the Submariner. I find both of them to be appealing.

The GMT brown-color dial is beautiful, compared to the black one

If he decides on a Submariner, surely I shall ask him to go after the rainbow-color dial. I have yet to see this particular dial in person. Probably, it is not a common color, since those I have come across come in black, blue and sometimes, brown in color. Never a rainbow-color dial. It must have escaped my attention.

Thank-you.
