Unless he is specifically interested in a mechanical watch (and is aware of maintenance costs associated with owning one), I would suggest a nice quartz watch.

I second this idea. Hw will the OP’s brother handle a watch that is 1-2 minutes off after a month (if it’s ± 4 sec/day) or even 5 minutes off (if it’s ± 10 sec/day, hitch is more likely for a sub $1000 automatic). Will he enjoy resetting it? Or will it annoy him so that he shoves it into a drawer and forgets about it.

Someone else recommended the Longines Conquest automatic. I will instead recommend the Longines Conquest VHP. Has the same look as the automatic, but the quartz movement is accurate to +/- 10 sec a year. I think we as watch enthusiasts tend to look down on quartz watches, but many have excellent movements that will last a long time and are inherently more accurate. I myself have a quartz chronograph that is my go to beater watch, and I am seriously considering getting a Grand Seiko quartz GMT because they are so good looking AND precise.

If it is an automatic watch for office use for a fellow with large wrist wanting something not too small, I'll recommend the Certina DS line of watches, particularly the Powermatic 80 series with their power reserve of - you guessed it - 80 hours. He won't have to wind it Monday morning after putting it away Friday and they are lovely watches.

The Himalaya version is about $750:

The Big Date versions can be had for about the same and come in great colours:

I like the continuous sweep of the Bulova Precisionist. Too bad they're all so damned ugly.

While I'm a fan of Seiko autos, I'd go with the Hamilton suggestions.
Lovely designs and great heritage.
That said, I like something a bit out of the ordinary so I'm going to say...

I think you meant 80 Hours 😁

OP, thats a solid suggestion, the new 80hr movements are found across Tissot too as well

I love the idea of having a "bro date", but unfortunately he lives across the country. If that were not the case, as another pointed out, he and I both would have more watches!

So I pulled the trigger on an SKX007. It's been my ole reliable for some time now and I figure he can feel this one out and if he gets the watch fever we'll move up from there. Worst case scenario he doesn't care for the automatic and I'll move to a quartz......and he can send me back the SKX I'll have two SKX's which doesn't sound so bad.

Thanks again to everyone for the great insight. I might have to investigate some of the other suggestions for myself. Shouldn't I get a watch for being a good brother?!??!

Cheers!

For someone coming from a hands-on career (or even in one), my default recommendation remains the Tudor Pelagos, an amazing tool watch. That said, I agree with @Archer and @Donn Chambers that quartz may be the way to go. We all chipped in when my old partner retired and got him a Seamaster 2264 in black (going back 12 years here, I know they are only available used now) for the same reasons they stated.

I think that is a good pick.
