Hi all, I have bought a wonderful example of these early waterproof chronographs but it is missing one of the pusher caps. Anyone with tips on sourcing one?

Very nice one. Well: you have one so you know the size ;-) I'd check the inventory of the Ofrei's of this world

Well, the tube diameter is 3mm, and the head diameter approx 4mm. Height of the head 2,5 to 3mm. My watchmaker is a bit puzzled (based on photographs) with the mechanisme, does the head just slide/push on?

IMO…..If your watchmaker is “puzzled” and making your search for parts, you have the wrong guy. That said …The watch is lovely. Nice catch!

The protruding threaded rod will screw into the tapped threads in the cap. Pretty standard.

No, this is not a threaded pusher. I think it is a 'driven' one, so pushed on, but then my watchmaker was puzzled that there is no serrated edge - the tube is completely smooth.

I was looking for the 4mm/3mm combination, but all I can find right now is 4mm/2.6mm and not options with tube higher than that 2.6mm diameter. Moreover, the most are threaded or 'driven', and the driven ones are maybe not suited for a smooth tube.

Anyway, the search continues, and I'm even looking into having the cap milled by a professional.

Then it would presumably be a press fit. Regardless, I have found that it can be very difficult to find matching pushers and/or caps for old chronographs. In the end, you may need to buy a pair that looks reasonably good and have your watchmaker modify them as needed. It might even be necessary to change out the tubes if the size is really uncommon. TBH, I also have some PTSD from other pusher cap projects.

Indeed, but that is the last resort. Would like to find an original replacement or already issue the milling assignment to make a good replacement based on the other one I have. We'll see. I'm very happy with the watch, it has a perfect mint dial and flawless case. I have time and am (relatively) patient.

Update: my watchmaker has a guy that will mill the missing cap - it will take some time and (a substantial amount of) money but I think it’s the best option. Will be sending the watch off early next week!

Ok … I withdraw my comment about the watchmaker.

What changed your mind?

Was it "He has a guy.."

Or ".. it will take some time..."

Or "...a substantial amount of money..."

😁

I think it was the ‘he has a guy’.
Always nice when they bring solutions and not only problems 😎

The shop I use has never shrunk from a challenge or asked me to source a part, so It puzzles me when it happens to others.
