I was disheartened to recently learn of the health issues facing vintage watch collector, author, and historian Bruce Shawkey, and thought it worthwhile to pass along his own words to the broader watch collecting community:

Greetings: as you may already know I suffered a major stroke back in January and had to close brucesvintagewatches.com. It impacted my left side and I am partially paralyzed in my arm and leg. I am working hard at rehab and slowly regaining strength and agility on my left side. I can walk short distances with a cane and am helping with a few household chores ... a long way from the days nurses had to lift me from my hospital bed using a crane.

The stroke has been particularly crushing because I now lack the fine motor skills to work on watches anymore which was a passion of mine but also my livelihood. In addition, I was a fairly accomplished piano player and am basically having to start over again to train my left hand to play on the keyboard. As you might imagine the stroke has been a hardship both physically and mentally.

I am writing to inform you that my good friend, Christopher Vandall, has established a gofundme page on my behalf. My medical bills are substantial even though I have coverage through the healthcare marketplace and will be on Medicare in about two more months. Nevertheless I have had many bills and will continue to have bills for copays and deductibles that could very well drain my savings.

I have never been one to ask my friends and relatives for money, but this has been a life-changing event for me and a threat to my financial survival. If you are so inclined, I would appreciate any support that you may be willing to give. The link to my gofundme page is as follows:

https://www.gofundme.com/f/please-help-support-bruce-shawkey

If you go to that link you can easily make a financial gift, and 100% of your donation will go to me.* Your donation will help ease my financial fears so I can focus on what really matters and that is getting better. I have made tremendous progress, but I still have a long road ahead of me.

Please do it now, as we tend to forget the things we put off. Good intentions don't pay the medical bills! Thanking you in advance for your time and help.

If this was a duplicate message from my personal email account, please accept my apologies.

Bruce Shawkey
*when you agree to tack on a small service charge to your donation

Those of you who collect vintage American watches or belong to NAWCC may already know of Bruce by the numerous articles and books he has written, such as:
Waltham Wristwatches A Collectors Guide Paperback
The Golden Age of the Swiss Wristwatch
Elgin Wristwatches A Collector's Guide
Hamilton Wristwatches: A Reference Guide

Please join me in wishing for his full and speedy recovery.

Sad, I received his email yesterday.

I have several of his books and have been buying watches from him going back close to twenty years.

I bought from him some time ago too. I am inclined to give some because of the quality of his aftersales service.
