2025 will celebrate 100th birthday of NASA astronaut Scott Carpenter... last alinea of my commemorative article
"Together with the other Mercury Seven astronauts, Carpenter" established the ASF - Astronaut Scholarship Foundation for science and engineering students. Carpenter鈥檚 love for wrist watches persisted as he wore both Rolex and Breitling watches during the rest of his life!

Listening to an interview with Scott Carpenter, taped 2008, it was great to hear he specifically asked BREITLING not to include a Tachymetre...
It looks like Carpenter provided feedback in late MArch 1962 and we know Walter Schirra was Carpenter's backup, so he had probably seen Schirra's Speedmaster CK2998 馃槈

May 24, 1962... The last time we saw Scott Carpenter's bespoke Breitling Navitimer chronograph ?
YouTube video = The Big Overshoot - Astronaut Scott Carpenter Discusses the Mercury Aurora 7 Mission
Immediately after helicopter pickup, Carpenter noticed his wrist watch chronograph was water-damaged and stored it into one of his pressure suit's gloves. Unfortunately the first moments onboard the Sea KIng helicopter were filmed in black and white but at 4:37 we can clearly see Carpenter holding the Breitling watch in his right hand and sliding it into the glove before putting the second glove on top... Later footage was in color.

As the YouTube video doesn't show up...
1962, May 24... Aurora 7 recovery :
After overshooting his splash-down area, NASA astronaut Malcolm Scott Carpenter had to wait hours before being picked up by a HSS-2 Sea King helicopter of USS Intrepid. During his time in the life raft, Carpenter took special care of two items, his 35mm Robot Recorder photo camera and his bespoke 24 hours dial/movement Breitling Navitimer chronograph wrist watch.
The first minutes onboard the helicopter were filmed in black & white but we clearly see the moment when Carpenter tucked his water-damaged Breitling Navitimer into his a glove of his pressure suit.
The space-flown Breitling watch resurfaced in 2019 and nowadays belongs to the collection of Gregory Breitling himself.
