🙄
At the time of US Navy Lt Scott Carpenter’s flight, NASA had not yet selected a watch to be worn by their astronauts so being a US Navy test pilot, Carpenter approached Swiss watch company Breitling in order to get a pilot chronograph with a 24 hour dial. Breitling came up with their Navitimer three sub-register chronograph in a 42 mm diameter version with 24 hour indication and simplified white colored slide rule bezel. Although the watch performed flawlessly during flight, on splash-down in the Atlantic Ocean northeast of Puerto Rico, Carpenter’s Navitimer chronograph got water-damaged and was returned to Breitling.
During Aurora-7 re-entry Carpenter overshot the landing point and had to wait more than 3 hours before being recovered by USS Intrepid. The photo used by Hodinkee shows a black figure in a life raft, more than probably a para rescue diver as Carpenter wore a flashy silver Goodrich pressure suit. Moreover most post-flight photos onboard the carrier show Carpenter without a wrist watch as he already took it of onboard the Sikorsky recovery helicopter.
The best post-flight photos were taken in the Carrier's Captain quarters where Scott Carpenter undressed and underwent the first medical checks by LtCol Doctor E. Schear. The Breitling nowhere to be seen!
So we would certainly like to see a photo showing Scott Carpenter in the life raft wearing the Breitling as most photos of Carpenter in a life raft were taken May 13, 1962 during recovery procedure rehearsal & training, without a watch.

Last but not least:
Quote:
When the community of enthusiasts who collect "space watches" and other space memorabilia began to emerge, circa 2000...
End quote
😲 It looks like the watch community never read a 1980s/1990s Aviation or Spaceflight magazine on the topic 😲
But kudos on writing an elaborate article on Carpenter's Breitling Navitimer as the 60 years wait seems to be over !

If you look closely, you can see the paradiver cuddling a person in a silver space suit 😁.

Of course but we see no clear Breitling on Carpenter's wrist... I have several time-period photo of the para rescue divers/frogmen putting the flotation collar around the capsule. NO good recovery photo showing Carpenter wearing the Breitling and he took it off together with his GOodrich spacesuit gloves during the Sikorsky helicopter ride... In fact, Mercury-Atlas 8 onwards, these helicopter got the nomination Sea King.
One more thing...
In fact the Mercury Seven astronauts color group photo was taken on October 21, 1963 so it shows Scott Carpenter wearing the new replacement Breitling Navitimer chronograph he received afterwards...

Of course ................................

Reading it again, I may have misunderstood you. I've corrected your sentence 😉.

...................... The photo used by Hodinkee also shows a black figure in the life raft, more than probably a para rescue diver as Carpenter wore a flashy silver Goodrich pressure suit.................

I'll go and sit in the pedant's corner now.

Its quite funny really you could say it operated well in a vacuum but failed under pressure, is this a person or a watch lol

Will it be dunked in seawater before delivery for that true 'authentically fυcked' look?

I can't believe Bretiting can take anything but shame from this, I'm not surprised they have waited some time before acknowledging it. I have handled many 1960s Navitimers, both 806 and 809 models (the latter, the Cosmonaute Carpenter actually inspired of course so the name is odd, must have been a rights thing) and the water ingress prevention is laughable. Most have water damage and as a consequence replaced dials.

Clutch that straw marketing guys.

Post-flight Aurora-7, Breitling provided Carpenter with a replacement chronograph... I believe the color group NASA photo (reference S63-18853) I posted above was dated October 21, 1963 ... so it looks like they quickly had a 2nd watch available!

During the press event Scott Kelly discusses repairing Sergey Volkov's Breitling.

From Fratellowatches - Scott Carpenter's Navitimer Cosmonaute Revealed - Event Recap

“You know, it was interesting to meet a cosmonaut wearing a Cosmonaute,”
Kelly jokes and also explains why his twin brother Mark and Russian cosmonaut Sergey Volkov are hovering over a Breitling repair kit on the International Space Station. “Sergey’s Breitling must have gotten caught on one of the countless hooks in the space station.” The bracelet broke and they needed replacement bars to fix it. Shipping an emergency kit to space to get the watch back on the wrist of a cosmonaut was probably one of few literally stellar customer services ever provided.

Sergey Volkov's flown Expedition 45/46 Breitling Cosmonaute watch has been for sale on eBay for a number of months now. It is sans a bracelet but wonder if this is the watch Kelly is referring referring too?

60 years ago... Mercury 7

1963, October 21 the seven " Mercury 7 " astronauts pose for an end-of-program group photo with US Navy LtCmdr Scott Carpenter on the right.
Note that, exactly 515 days after his "Aurora 7" mission, Carpenter wore an all black dial Breitling Navitimer replacement for his custom-made "Cosmonaute" which got damaged during splash-down & recovery operations in May 1962.
MoonwatchUniverse has written a day-to-day account article showing that a launch delay due to a parachute hardware fault enabled Carpenter to receive the 1962 "Cosmonaute" in time to be worn as the first Swiss-made wrist watch in space!
At this time, October 1963 the NASA astronaut office brainstormed about an official astronauts' chronograph and by October 1964 NASA had just received chronograph wrist watches from Hamilton, Longines-Wittnauer, Omega and Rolex for testing in order to determine which brand would become flight-qualified for their manned space program!
Three decades after Carpenter’s Aurora 7 mission, Breitling chronographs returned to space as the “Chronomat”, “Cosmonaute” and “Chronospace” versions were worn by French cosmonauts (CNES spationautes) Michel Tognini (1992), Claudie André-Deshays (1996) and Léopold Eyharts (1998).

Just received a .pdf proof-reading version of my article " First Swiss-made watch in space: Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute "
It reads a bit like a day-to-day account article showing that a launch delay due to a parachute hardware fault enabled Carpenter to receive the 1962 "Cosmonaute" in time to be worn as the first Swiss-made wrist watch in space!
Here're some interesting Carpenter photos, confirming that between US Navy Sealab assignments (testing Rolex Submariner), in 1966 Scott Carpenter almost exclusively wore a Breitling Navitimer chronograph again !

1884 - 2024 = 140 years BREITLING
By now, available in print as MoonwatchUniverse already anticipated the BREITLING anniversary with a detailed article how in May 1962, a bespoke all black 24 Hours dial BREITLING Navitimer "Cosmonaute" chronograph made it just-in-time to Cape Canaveral to sit on the wrist of NASA Mercury 7 astronaut US Navy Lt aviator Scott Carpenter during "Aurora 7" spaceflight mission.
It became the first Swiss-made wrist-watch in space spending 4 hours 55 minutes, before being water-damaged during post splash-down recovery procedures.
BREITLING celebrated the 60th anniversary of this chronograph in May 2022, but we bring some unseen photographs of the late Scott Carpenter wearing the chronograph pre- and post-spaceflight!
