Three Homer moments, automatic, double "VI" and "IIII" instead of "IV".
I vote to keep it.

Actually "IIII" is common practice on watch dials. I was a bit surprised to learn this, but do a Google image search on "Roman Dial Watch." When I did it, I did not see a single "IV" all Iof them had "IIII". It is a bit weird for me when I first realized this, but I guess this was a stylistic choice.

Past threads concerning 'IIII' indicate it was typically done to 'balance' the dial.

To be fair. IIII is pretty common on watches and clocks.

Thank you everyone for the insight and advice. The goal is to wear the watch, the sentimental value outweighs all. To give an update I took it in for a full service to get it working again as the sweeping seconds hand is too cool to leave sitting.

As for the dial I am leaving its wackiness as is for now, but slowly researching a dial artist to recreate a more classic look in the future. Will post pictures when I receive it back. Cheers!

That shows a dial that could have come on that watch. This is a case where a factory restoration might be warranted, depending on how far you want to take it. There are also some dial refinishers that can do what is today called "collector level" restoration. I can ask my watchmaker who he used for one of mine....

This might be an inspiration too....

was your grandfather at D-Day?
He was, stationed most of the war in France from what I know.
well, just a thought: 6/6, June 6th... your grandfather actually asked for it that way... to commemorate the event and subsequent losses.

So much for the old saying "it's five o'clock somewhere" 😁

Someone had a Homer Simson "D'oh!" moment.

That's a big part of the charm in leaving the dial as-is.

Oh damn, didn't even notice it goes from 4 to 6 to 6 lol amazing
