Ok. Glad they haven't introduced this FOIS with a Cal. 321... so my CK2998-4 remains the OG and one and only true FOIS. Yes, I know. Selfish I am. 😎

Pretty much as expected. Looks good, hopefully with no milky ring. Now people will be asking, "Does that bracelet fit the Trilogy Speedmaster? Or other 19mm lug versions"

This is a real alternative to those that want a little smaller, guard free style watch and don't need a sapphire back. Not exactly a bargain at US$7,900 though, that's $900 (+12.9%) more than the plain back 3861 standard release, but you do get a sapphire crystal with this new one.

Will people hate on the fauxtina?
They already are on instagram (only 5 minutes after release)

They did last time so probably yes.

I see this hurting 321 values (by which I mean the current watch) but I guess they figure they have milked that cow long enough and can afford to go down market to capture volume.

Don't think this will have any effect on the 321 Ed White, a different watch for a different market.

I think if you're in the market for your first speedmaster, this makes your choice difficult.

Hesalite, black sapphire, white dial, or slightly smaller vintage look.

If you try both on you quickly realise that the straight lugs don't actually look smaller since the bezel and dial are the same size as the Pro, they do somehow feel deeper as a result.

Maybe but the big USP of the NEW was that it was the only straight lug available (it wasn't a coincidence they canned the original FOIS when it launched) and really looked like the 1960s original EW. Much of that applies with this release too (vs the original 2998 I mean) at a much lower price point so I do see some prospective 321 buyers moving over to this. They tried other modern straight lug variants before of course, the recent CK2998s, and those didn't exactly fly off the shelves. This one looks a much more sure fire winner to my eye at least. I'm actually tempted by it, I prefer it to the Trilogy watch.

Interesting that they have monkeyed around with the lug shapes yet again. Can't they make their mind up what model had what lugs?

I for one am over the fauxtina look. I have it on my Seamaster 300 heritage and it has started to annoy me enough that am considering letting it go. At first, I liked it, then I was “eh, whatever,” now it is, “Man, I wish this had standard lume.” The problem is that unless you are in bright light, the indices and 3-6-9-12 can hardly be seen.

I have the “original” FOiS edition and prefer it over this one because it has the standard white indices, greenish lume. While this one is tempting with the real stepped dial and the 3861 movement, I think I will stick with the original and pick up a hesalite Speedy Pro with the 3861 to join it someday.

I kinda like it. Not sure I'd ever be able to get over the fact that it's a copy and constantly think I'd prefer an original. Perhaps standard, or very slightly tinted lume would have been better.

That looks like a great rendition of a blue soleil dial that I look forward to trying on. It would have been even better if they had kept the subdial hands uniform, either all alpha or all batons. That detail always bothered me with the original FOIS.

just like i was afraid of, i am really digging this release...
love the new case finish (like the EdWhite), the dial, old logo, aluminium bezel, bigger crown, smooth caseback.
one thing they could have improved are the flat looking alpha hands. this is something that i somehow dislike on the first FOIS reedition.

Another factor that i prefer about the previous version though is the good old 1861 movement.

price wise, is a lot of cash, but i think its fair, especially they offer it slightly cheaper on leather strap.
