This is my first foray into the vintage Omega world. Thought I'd share. Omega Seamaster Chronograph, Cal 1040, 176.005. I'm officially hooked. Now on the hunt for a Speedy..
Congratulations on your first Omega, I'm sure you've caught the Omega bug. Hope we all get to see your collect grow.
Nice pick-up!. Is the case gold?. If so, I have a question for the community. What are the options for restoring gold plated/20 micron watch cases?
A score for the Canadians! (sadly not to be repeated at the next Winter Olympics re. hockey). That does have generous dollops of retro disco about it. I like it!
Not sure about restoring gold plate - have never seen it done But here is what they should look like ( photo shamlessly borrowed from a thread on another forum called dogen's vintage omega's )
Thanks for all the well wishes! I'd most likely not restore the case, I like the originality of the worn look although the watch would have looked sharp brand new..
As I understand it, restoration can be done if the original finish isn't too far gone but it is an expensive process. I bought a gold plated Omega Yachting chronograph 176.010 for the rare dial, but the case was as over-polished as I've ever seen. I reached out to some places that have done gp restorations and was told that my case was beyond saving. So I ended up buying a service case, which Omega thankfully still makes and I was luckily able to snag on eBay for a reasonable price. The wholes saga, with more pics, can be found here, and here's a side-by-side shot of the service case next to the trashed one:
You poor sad misguided fool! Do you realise what you have done? Fallen in love with an average 176.005 and now you're smitten. You must get out now, right now, while you can, and don't look back! Or...............................you will become one of us. One of us, one of us, one of us............... Say it to yourself! Resistance is futile.
You're up early Marty, enjoy your coffee while I finish the evening with a wee dram. No rain here today, finished mid-week and tanks are full, gardens are well watered and it looks like a great weekend for football.
