Here in Denmark female watchmakers are pretty common, according to one female watchmaker I know 😀

Sat on a bus with a female watchmaker in Denmark on my way to Haderup. She was returning from Omega training.

Was on my way to visit a mate who was a sergeant in the army who had invited me to stay at his property that backed onto a beautiful meandering stream with fish aplenty but were out of season to catch 👎 lovely part of Denmark

Nice to see your humor sensor is intact...
I could have rambled on how that "ess" stuff came from Norman French and "maker" predates the Norman invasion of England, so it wouldn't have been inflected that way....

Now that is the kind of trivia I love.

from my quick search ... seeing as we all love nerding out on useless cruft 😀

watchmaker is one word.

and

(first known use is 1630)

and ‘-ess’ for our lovely lady versions predates that.

(but that’s probably a load of bollocks anyhow)

Cheers to our Watchmakeress’s 😁

Oh come on, it's clear that "maker" is a much older word and predates the use of "watch" as a timepiece.

I am excited to see young watchmakers of any gender. I worry about access to good watchmakers in the future, especially those with an interest and appreciation for vintage watches. Diversity is always good as well and broadens the hobby to a wider audience. I know I appreciate the contributions of our female members. For one, I get tired of look at y'all's hairy wrists.

My current watchmaker is a younger guy, looks like he's in his 30s. So he'll outlast me. 😁

Women are dominant in the manufacturing of the parts that go into watches, at least based on all the Swiss factories I've gone through. It was mostly women on the shop floor, but also some men. When it comes to the movement and final assembly part of it though, things flip the other way - mostly men, with a few women.

I can say in all the watchmaking classes I've been to, and in all the various brand training sessions I've attended, it was mostly men by a very large margin.
