Long ago and in another country I was at the Avis desk to rent a car. I knew that my actual driving licence which was just a big sheet of printed text caused puzzlement in that country so I offered my race driver's licence -- complete with photograph. Avis took it!

it’s not that they looked at my ID but scanned it (barcode) into their system. There’s a lot of info on your drivers license that FedEx doesn’t need.
Are you on FB? Do you have a smart phone? Do you use credit cards? Do you not use a VPN?

If you said yes to any of those, showing a DL to ship something is the least of your worries.

Or my personal favorite, "grumble grumble I don't wanna have to remember another password grumble grumble... oh that's nice of them"

A local store chain here has mandatory ID check no matter your age. Guys in their 70s get carded.

See? The GUBMINT has already infiltrated your area! 😜

That is actually somewhat secure as they do not store the FB data. On the other hand, you do need a good FB password, and 2-factor authentication on your FB to stay secure.

Oh it's not the hackers that's a problem there - it's the fact that you are essentially shouting to Google, Facebook, or Apple - "HEY I USE THIS AND THIS IS EVERYTHING I DO ON THIS SERVICE" because once you log in with one of them, it's first-party data.

Its been like this for several years at all the Fedex owned locations if you dont have an account. As long as you have an account its fine, you just drop off the box and go.

I would assume the system just enters the barcode if needed in the future when they discover your shipped contraband. Its highly unlikely they are entering all your data in their database.

BTW- made a return at Home Depot lately? They scan your ID too...you may have to buy a fake id if you are too concerned. I have a friend...

A lot of large (some small) retail chains scan ID's with returns. They do this to weed out fraud and track how many times people do it. If your name is in the system too much, they will flag you and prevent you from making returns chain wide.

yes, exactly. Im aware of why they do it, and its good thing frankly. We all pay the price for excessive returns...some people will return the same product 3-4 times seeking a perfect version while others are basically borrowing products to use for a few days with the full intent of just returning it. All of those returned items cant be resold as new...raising the retail price we all pay.

My point is that Fedex is not doing anything unusual...its going to be the new norm.

Agreed. I wasn't trying to educate you but sharing for those that don't know 😀. I can understand why FedEx does it and it wouldn't bother me or make me second guess doing business with them.

Yeah, you say that now.... next thing you know, you'll have to show your ID just to buy a beer!

That's been a hell of a long time for me!

I've never had FedEx ask me for an ID. That's very intrusive, now that I know it's a thing with them I will just use a different shipper.

Never been asked by FedEx for an ID.

Also, USPS delivered registered mail to me yesterday, but said due to COVID I didn't have to sign for it. So I got that going for me...which is nice.

WTH!! I go to ship the watch I sold and FedEx says I need to show ID to send a package. They scanned my driver’s license. What next, fingerprinting, retinal scan?

Strange, I shipped a watch last week and they didn't ask for any ID but I'm located in Canada, not sure if that makes a difference.

Too many issues of people stealing packages unfortunately
