Fakers risk

I am getting worried that the forum is being used by fraudsters to improve the quality of fakes.

By learning what gets spotted the fakes are harder to spot, and they can improve. This methodology is used in other areas.

any thoughts? What could be done?

Can you be more specific what has lead you to this belief? Is this is reference to vintage or current models?

As a buyer, I would rather have the advantage of coming here for advice from the experienced members on what to look for and risk having a small percentage of counterfeiters improve the the quality of their fakes. The benefit, to me, outweighs the risks.

Knowledge dissemination will always have that risk. But not everything is revealed here. There are several specific instances here in this forum where the member will explicitly say they do not want to reveal everything they know.

I’m afraid there is no simple answer to that question. But I know that if knowledge is not shared fakers will win every time! History teaches us that ignorance never brought fortune to any civilisation.

I believe our only weapon against this threat is more knowledge... 📖

Still have not seen a good fake Speedy....
They don’t exist as they have never tried to make a movement for it.

I am a bit suspicious of some of the alleged newbie requests. It’s a bit like when the eBay listing says estate sale and includes two old dresses and a pair of shoes, but the watch back is off and then a pic of the movement on a holder device

The only reason to fake a watch is to make money. To do this the faker must produce a watch considerably more cheaply than the genuine manufacturer. It then follows that there is a limit to the amount of refinement that can be achieved at a price - that is the protection.

They don't have to - they just use a Lemania branded version and modify it to make it look like an Omega movement. I've seen it done and had one in my shop.

They even get posted on this forum from time to time...

Remember this? | Omega Forums

In this case the other parts are Omega, but there are fake Speedmaster parts out there - cases, bezels, case backs, pushers, etc.

I agree, and it is partly why I like old eternas -hopefully too small am market to bother but it is more about tell tales on mis matched parts. Particularly where there are so many spares repairs type omegas out there as donors.

Luckily you can easily tell the difference between real and fake if you have a good nose for these things. 👍

But then you won’t have the pleasure of lighting the paper bag on fire and ringing the door bell.

Presumably his ego has been writing cheques his body can’t cash.
