The OP has PM'd me and I have verified that the serial number matches the model number. To me the engraving does not look off - I see a lot of variation in how clear the engraving is on Omega cases (it also varies in size). I don't really pay attention to the orientation of it though, at least I have not in the past.
So I just checked 5 modern Omega watches in the shop - 3 have the engraving pointing out, and 2 have them pointing in. I don't believe orientation of the engraving will be a diagnostic tool to determine originality.
The photos are of poor quality, so judging the movement is difficult, but the 8500 is not easy to copy with any sort of accuracy.
I have already advised the owner to take it to an AD who can look at it in person to verify authenticity. It would be nice if he could confirm once he has done this.
Cheers, Al
