I am considering to buy thisPurchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network Constellation on eBay however I am put off by its faded observatory logo. Does a typical logo wear that much really? Would a faded observatory logo matter to your buying decision? Also, what other pitfalls you see in this watch if there are any?
Yes they wear that much. I have close to the same model that I've restored and the only thing I had trouble getting was another caseback. I'll dig through and see if I can find photos for you.
I believe that medallion was subjected to polishing. Personally I will stay away if the medallion is in this state. The sky is just too overcast.
Here is the thread http://forums.watchuseek.com/f20/1961-constellation-restoration-408195.html There are a couple of the usual suspects there too Unfortunately there aren't any caseback photos so I'll have took a bit more. With regards to polishing the medallion off, yes I agree that it is usually the case when you see watches like that but it can happen naturally through a lot of wear.
It's not just the medallion that has been polished, but the whole case as well. I suppose if you get it cheaply (like half the price ) it wouldn't be a bad buy, but I would wait for one with a nicer case.
watchco has all types of original vintage constellation case backs. just ask them with the case number. good luck ! achim
They dont have any 168.005 case backs anymore. I am looking for a SS 168.005 back, and watchco said they no longer have any stock of these.
That medallion and case has seen some serious use and/or polishing. Have a look at mine - http://omegaforums.net/threads/not-the-black-sheep-och-the-family-connie-inside.3335/ Even though mine has blurred edges on top of the lugs (from use and/or earlier polishing) the medallion is nowhere near the one in your link. Mine has very little wear on the medallion and the bezel is crisp. I would stay away from that watch as I, from the looks of it, believe it to be either seriously overpolished or have lived a very harsh life. regards JE
that`s the next best thing................. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Omega-GE...416189857?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item58929265a1Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
Seen that already thanks, but Id rather hang on for the correct one. They do appear from time to time, and putting the wrong back on only turns it into a franken.
Is it though? If you have a watch with case ref. 168.005 and swap the back for one with ref 168.004, surely that is incorrect? The watch I am referring to is the one below, if I put a 168.004 case back on, it is incorrect for the rest of the watch. http://omegaforums.net/threads/omeg...168-005-stainless-steel-£450.3407/#post-39453
I've tidied it up now, put the correct second hand and crystal retaining ring on and cleaned the dial up a little and its looking like a nice tidy watch now. Just holding out for the correct case back.
This onePurchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network too seems to be a good example that could have fallen victim to overzealous buffing or polishing. Looking at the medallion, it seems one star has fallen off and created a hole in the medallion. Or is it just shadow?
I guess not, forgot you needed a silver one. But a 168.005 with gold medallion, now that would do in a pinch.
