Everyday wear or Pride of Possession

Afternoon all,

I recently bought a Speedmaster Sapphire Sandwich which I’ve lusted after for years. £4,300 is a lot of money to spend on a watch, but my question is How many of you actually wear your luxury timepieces on a day to day basis. I’ve noticed how paranoid I was becoming about wearing mine because of scratching, catching, damaging the watch/bracelet. BUT It’s a Keeper this one and one I’ll pass to my eldest when it’s time so my outlook has changed. I’m wearing it as my daily wear and enjoying the wrist time without being paranoid as it’s purely mindset and after all what’s a watch for.
Interested on your thoughts??

I wear this watch Every. Single. Day.

There’s a recent thread from someone inquiring about getting a great grandfather’s non-running ancient Omega in working order for the poster’s son. The watch is covered in scuffs and scratches that are part of its life with a cherished ancestor. If you’re going to own a watch that’s built to last for the rest of your life and pass it on to a loved one, you should wear it all the time and scratch the hell out of it.

I have a couple of fairly pristine watches I inherited from my dad, and his well-worn 18k Seamaster. Guess which one gets regular wrist time and reminds me of him all the time.

Just my humble opinion but watches are definitely made to be worn and enjoyed. Of course, there's a time and place for everything. My Speedy FOIS is now my daily wearer, but I still revert back to my old Seamaster Pro if I'm going swimming on holidays or working in environments that can expose the leather strap of the FOIS to fluids that stain (oils, paints etc). Agree with some posters here that it's almost inevitable that watches will pick up a scratch or two when worn daily and that the first scratch hurts the most, but afterwards you live with it. A bit like a new car really...

I wear my watches on rotation, some might be rotated more often than others but none are just for looking. I've enjoyed my Speedy sandwich which gets a fair amount of wear.

Birth year Mark II worn everyday, doing everyday things.
Also, a Breitling Aerospace, in regular rotation with a customised SKX009, and a Tag F1 Pro chrono.

All bought to wear, not to protect for the next owner. 😀

You'd rather save it for the next guy? Wear it, enjoy it, earn the patina.

This reminds me of a post I think I read on a guitar forum.
Let me see if I can paraphrase -

Having a nice watch and not wearing it is like marrying a beautiful woman and not having sex with her so she'll be a virgin for the next guy.

1861 since mid 2020, wear the watch almost every single day and also sleep with it, 24./7
Hesalite is scratched, I already have 3 leather straps and 1 Omega Nato and changing in between with the bracelet.
It is my first watch I don't feel selling after couple of months, a real pleasure to wear it.

Expensive yes but if you wear it like only twice that’s a hell of a lot more expensive per wear then if you wear it everyday for the next 10 years!

If £4300 was expensive for you wear it as often as you can to get your ££££ worth!

I have a 2020 Rolex Submanier 116610ln, a 2020 1861 Speedy Pro, and a 2019 Seiko SKX013

I love and enjoy all 3 watches about equally.

However, I wear the Rolex and Omega daily.

I just get a lot of pleasure from wearing them. I love the heft to them.

Great looking pieces.

They are scratched yes, but it's part of the fun.

I enjoy watching them age with me.

and I hate the thought of having to be supe careful every time I wear them.

Hello!
I wear this 24/7, including work and nights when I sleep. It does pick up scratches but overall it holds very well on anything I do. Basically I don’t take it off my hand at all just when I clean it and then back on my wrist.
It is 1971 production, cal 861.

I don't own anything that wasn't purchased to be used for it's intended purpose, and used as much as possible. I don't want to own a museum worthy car, truck, house, gun, boat, or watch. I like to use things, not worry about them.

I wear my SMP white dial without much worry. I put it on a rubber bad with deployment. My Sub Date and Seamaster MC I am more careful with but will still wear.

Have 5 watches (Speedy, Explorer II, 2 Sinns and a Halios) that I rotate every few weeks. Otherwise wear my watches during waking hours. Isn’t that the point of this hobby?

This is a really lovely thread. Since becoming a mother, I've rarely worn jewelry or watches except for "special occasions." I am glad to see so many saying that they wear their watches in rotation, thus cutting the difference between being a "collector" and an "enthusiast." Why have a lovely piece if it just lives in a box at home or the bank? That said, right now my only "proper watch" is an Omega that doesn't seem to have a name but is a gold Gent's with a gorgeous mesh band.

My Worldtimer is my daily wear. My view is there is no point getting the thing you've been wanting for years only for it to be in storage. Character and a few scratches on a watch are par for the course and in my opinion are a good thing. I’m going to service it every 5-7 years. Just insure it and good to go!
