Ever Regret a Purchase? How did you Respond?

During the last lockdown we decided on a whim to get a TV. All we could find locally and on short notice was a fifty some inch Westinghouse.

We have a decent Westinghouse stove and a very accurate old electric clock. They should not put their name on TVs.

Worst TV ever. And way too big!

We got a much smaller one yesterday, the same day I got my first Speedmaster.

I put the Westinghouse at the curbside. When my wife saw the sign that I included she laughed and said that it should read: “$50. Your cash is in the mailbox! Thanks for taking the TV”

It felt great to put that TV on the curbside.

Sometimes it took ten minutes to get it going. Power on = no sound.
Power off and on again. No response
Wait 2 minutes. Power on = green screen
Power off and on. Image good, no sound.

I almost tossed it in the ravine a few times, but care too much about the environment!!!

A colleague bought the same TV and returned it for a store credit. We got more satisfaction putting it at the road.

What have you bought that just did not meet your expectations? How did you react?

Photos. (I don’t wear shorts in public, but was wearing some during my workout which was followed by the TV toss. You may notice my reflection in the screen. Best image ever )

I bought my first flat screen TV a few years ago. The volume was so quiet it could barely be heard across the room. I returned it and the sales rep confidently said “yah, you just need a sound bar”. Okay I said, which sound bar will you give me for free? “Well we can’t do that” they said, So I got my money back and left them with the tv. Bizarre how crappy some products are these days. I sometimes feel like they are laughing at me for buying them.

No crocs! Not allowed in this house! It was either old Cushe or Palladiums. I already felt bad about shorts and Speedmaster! Oh, and the TV remains unclaimed. It may become a work prop.

I recently bought a Tudor black bay 58 blue dial on bracelet. Beautiful watch but I hated it and it’s the first time I felt so much remorse after buying. I like to buy something at my own pace, I felt I was push to buy it and wasn’t happy. The more I looked at it, the more I hated it. I sold it new unworn, lost £800 on it which taught me a lesson how you can lose money quickly on watches and the margin dealers make on watches which is quite big. I was so relieved to sell it.

I would like to look at the positive of this experience which taught me a lot.

I admit I have a pair, maybe 10 years ago someone gave my brother a pair that he didn’t want and were too small so I took them. They’re lined so not just the rubber ones. I’ve used them maybe 40 times in the last ten years, they’re okay for running to the grill when theirs an inch or two of snow on the ground. I don’t think I’ve worn them in about 3 years now.

8 years ago when we got our dog as a puppy we were past the point of keeping him in a crate at night and instead had the crate for him but door open. I woke up one morning to the sound of water running/pooling next to the bed, I thought the roof was leaking… turned on the light and found my dog squatting over the crocs taking a good pee right in them.

This FOIS is your fault! You listed your two old ones a year too soon! I love it!

Sixty years ago, I bought a 1929 model A Ford touring car that had sat in a farmers field in Saskatchewan, for decades. I paid $50.00 for it. I borrowed a tow bar, and a friend and I drove 450 miles in my 1949 Mercury, to pick it up. I towed it home, and it was parked in a shared driveway for over a year. My father and the neighbour he shared the driveway with told me the car had to go. It was an excellent restoration project, but it didn’t run, and needed much work. I sold it for $50.00 just to get rid of it. Sold it a guy who had bought a wrecked model A that had been restored. He made one car out of two, and sold it! Consequence! Today, I have neither the model A or the Mercury, both eminently collectible cars! But I do have a hobby car, after all.

I’ve regretted many purchases. That’s the reason why I’ve gone through so many watches, but I guess I only regret the ones that I have lost money on when I sold.

Hmmmmmmm. Never drink and go car shopping. Mid 80s I went for a few pops after work with the guys. Then I stopped at a Mitsubishi dealer and bought a Cordia coupe. Worst POS ever, and worst purchase. Whenever I see a one of their cars today, I still feel sick.

I had to look that up. It had that 80s look though. Not quite a Celica or Supra but sleek. The specs show that it was not a barn burner for sure.

It did nothing well. Unbalanced, underpowered, poorly built, horrendous in snow. My 100 mile a day commute did it in. Engine failed at 70k. Bought a new Accord in 89.

My wife and I haven't made too many purchases that we've totally regretted. The only one that stands out was way back in 1977 when we were shopping for a new car. For some reason I've never fully understood but one night we ended up putting a $50 deposit on a new AMC Pacer which we immediately regretted, and we cancelled the deal next day. The dealer basically said, 'yeah, I understand'. We ended up buying a leftover 1976 Ford Mustang II with a 302 V8 and manual transmission which turned out to be worst car we have every owned.....terrible in every way from the days when US manufacturers were turning out their worst constructed cars. Swore I would never buy another Ford or American car, and I didn't, until I bought a 2015 Ford Focus ST. Six years in and other than oil, filter and tire rotations/replacement it has never been back to the dealer for any sort of work, dead reliable and no rattles or squeaks, still a blast to drive.

Ever Regret a Purchase?
- almost every watch, impulse purchased from ebay during sleep deprivation, without knowledge or proper due diligence

How did you Respond?
- bite the bullet, try to learn the lesson

A Nissan X trail. I had it for 18 months and it spent more time being repaired than on the road. It put me off owning a another car for life. Just a bottomless drain on my bank balance. Car free for more than three years now and stress levels greatly reduced.

Fantastic that you went car free! We rely on it based on the excuse that we live in the country, but I am sure we could adapt. Small steps… we went “Microwave-Oven” free 20 years ago. Most people cannot understand how we can go without it!
