You can buy a lot of things for $2-3k... but to be fair none will do the job of a mint DON bezel!

Sadly, the one in question is far from being mint. In fact I would describe it as little better than average.
God knows what a mint one will go for in a month or so. Probably getting close to 2915 bezel madness.

Interesting too that a pair of #6's sold for about the same price recently.

But is the market smaller for endlinks?

There was also a 1039 bracelet that sold last week for almost $1700.

Plenty of Mark II speedies out there for the price of a bezel!
I've been considering a black dial one to go with my racing.... 😀

Maybe I'll sell a bezel and buy a watch.

Looks like everyone was watching this.

Is it possible to be surprised and not shocked at the same time?!

Every time another in half way decent condition sells I think 'this must be where they level off'. And they geberally do for a week or so.

And lets be honest about it, if it wasn't for forums like this one, these bezels would be thrown in the bin and be considered worthless everytime a speedmaster went in for a service. If replacement pushers and crowns, and now artificially aged hands are acceptable, why not replacement bezels. The distain towards replacement bezels is the driving force for the ridiculous prices these bezels are fetching.
Why is a watch with correct pushers and crown considered inferior to a watch with wrong pushers and crown just because its beaten up bezel has been changed for a new one?

Regardless of anyone's personal opinions on value, the market sets the price in a public auction.

All we can say with certainty about future prices is... nothing.

The only people that care are collectors...because they value originality. I don't know any collector that is ok with artificially aged parts unless the item in question is extremely rare and the original part just doesn't exist.

This is not unique to watches or Speedmasters.

Precisely. These auctions are the best way to determine the true value TODAY.

Perfectly inelastic demand or bubble? ::stirthepot::
I sure don't know.
I have a 6263 with a hairline crack in the insert.
I have been meaning to replace it for at least 5 years.
3-4 years ago, I could have bought an NOS one for like $2k
I just looked on eBay and there is one one used 1 for sale
at $3.7k. I guess mine is going to stay original. Lol
Funny thing is, we haven't even gotten to the stage with
Speedmasters yet that people start analyzing the fonts on the inserts.
How thin or how thick, etc.
I'll tell you a story. On VRF about 5 years ago, I started a thread
showing 3 6263 bezels. One was a picture of mine that I knew was
real bc I bought the watch new in 1979. I put pictures of 2 others
that were good fakes with it. I asked the question of the VRF guys
which were real, which were fake, or are all real, or all fake.
No one could answer correctly. A few even said how bad a fake
one of them was. Yea, you guessed it, that one was mine, the only
real one.

So is this $8000 worth?

I better get a safe. Who needs to hoard gold?

Now time to roll out one of my favorite photos from yesteryear:
