I'm not and I know there have been a fair number of complaints on the forum about the authenticator's in general. My only experience was not stellar, the authenticator shipped the FOIS to me w/o requiring a signature so it was left on the front steps while I was out of town. Luckily a friend was able to get over to the house that night but still pretty frustrating.

Just keep an eye on how they ship it off.

Lost extra bracelets shipped with a watch, case back shields missing on Speedmasters, shipped in dodgy packages….

Good luck

I am not sure what country you are in but I have one experience as a buyer in the US, of a watch that I purchased on Ebay and it went through the authenticator. The watch was packaged well, needed signature for delivery, didn't seem to appear any different from the photographs supplied by the seller at time of purchase so no damage seemed to be incurred during the process. My observation of the authenticator process is that it could really become a good way for private sellers to sell watches. It will of course have somne cost associated, but I wouldn't have to be a known seller or jeweler, and my watch could be authenticated which should alleviate apprehension of buying from a private seller. I am sure Ebay wants this platform to work and will managing the results to insure no fakes get out there, and if any questions do arise the buyer is protected by the Ebay process.

Is this in the US? Usually it is done by Stoll & Co.

Yes, in the US. You're right about Stoll. I googled the address I shipped it to and learned it is Stoll & Co. Thanks.

I have no experience as seller or buyer. But what are they authenticating?
That the watch is not a fake or copy?
That the parts are original?
That the dial is not refinished?
That the movement is correct for this model?

i would really like to know.

I’d say that the watch is not a “fake”, and that it matches the description roughly. They sure as hell aren’t gonna be able to tell if a dial is refinished or a plexi isn’t original.

I agree, but I cannot find what eBay says they are doing specifically. Only that it is “authenticated”. If you get bit by this, there is another thread, or two, that shows you have no recourse.

I received this email today from eBay:

Good news, your item was authenticated!
Next, your item will be professionally repackaged and shipped to the buyer with its unique authentication card. The shipping process comes at no cost to you, and includes a signature confirmation. We’ll let you know when it’s delivered!

The buyer also received an email that the watch is on its way. So far, so good!

I bought a Rolex 5504 on eBay that failed authentication because of a fake crown and tube. I was able to drive down and purchase it from the seller. The fake crown was mentioned in the listing. every other part was authentic. I guess the authenticator needs to cover their butt.
