Either Covid-19 first surfaced in Wuhan, China or it didn't. Fact: It did. Not allowing that fact to be stated in referencing it is a deliberate attempt to mask it's origin, that's offensive in my view. But whatever.
Oh boy, I said it here with no offense meant early on in the pandemic got called a racist.

Can't use the word 'transitional', as in 'my car's six speed transitional gave out', on the Wall Street Journal's comment system. Can't use 'Wuhan flu' either, even though flus have usually been named after where they first appeared. But prohibited in this case. Much of it is automation and AI, but much of it is pure censorship.

EDIT: the word I typed above was NOT 'transitional', you can guess what it was but the OF system won't allow the word to be used, this silliness exists here on OF as well. Stupid rules exist everywhere, lest someone's feelings get hurt.

Sounds like you are the one who's taking offense...

To repeat, COVID-19 is not flu (influenza). And despite your halfhearted attempt to justify it with semantics, the underlying motivation to use the phrase "Wuhan flu" is clear to everyone. It's a well-known dog-whistle, pure and simple.

Yes, but Wuhan Flu was not the official name given to the SARS-CoV-2 strain called COVID-19, which is not influenza. The name was coined by a particular politician for a political purpose, and used by the followers of that politician as thinly veiled xenophobia. And the phrase served its purpose in inciting violence against Chinese-Americans.

Agreed.

Bird flu, swine flu - not named after their locations.

The original SARS - not named after a location.

Spanish flu - first documented case was in Kansas, USA, so the name is a misnomer. In fact it was wartime censors that wanted to not have it be a US thing that said it originated in neutral Spain.

This is why using a scientific name is far better, although some old dogs still love to hear their whistles...

I preferred calling the H1N1 the Heini flu- sounded more fun.

No, it’s a case of “I’m so damn tired of political correctness!”

Borat singing about the Wuhan Flu is absolutely hilarious to me. Why? Because I don’t take it seriously and you shouldn’t either.

So, it’s time to trot out this drop in…

It’s called “satire” folks. Not meant to be taken literally.

This has gone quite a bit off of the topic of Austrian potty mouths.

I have to say my main exposure to our friends who have a “you’re not in Australia” desk in their airport are Helmut Marko, Gerhard Berger, Toto Wolf and Nikki, all of whom are probably also banned by eBay for foul language.

Honest question. Why?

I get that people believe they should be able to say whatever they want. Okay, say whatever you want.

But why do those same people believe that other people shouldn't have their own thoughts?

I am free to say what I want but other people are not free to think differently about it?

Absolutely there's over reaction. But there's been a lot of unchecked entitlement to date.

There's a lot of Francis's who can't handle that just maybe they aren't the center of the universe.

Of course they should. They are free to think whatever they want about me based on what I have written.

I am free to say what I want but other people are not free to think differently about it?
Who said that? Certainly not I.

Cancel culture can go to hell. It’s also why I’m not active on social media. Can’t cancel what isn’t there.

We need to celebrate our diversity, not try to force one point of view down everyone’s throat.

An aside . . .

Once upon a time, I was a community member of a forum where "management" implemented automatic substitutions for words or word fragments that were considered objectionable.

Words containing the letters that form hell or damn or cock were among those which were treated to automatic substitution.

So, for example, the word "shell" would come out as "sheck."

"An artillery sheck landed nearby, but fortunately, no one was injured."

"I just thought to say hecko to my good friend!"

There was a fellow who participated whose name was "Hathcock." Every time his name was mentioned, it came out as "Hathchicken."

"The man chickened the hammer of his revolver as he prepared to shoot!"

So what were the original words for these substitutes?

"Please don't attempt to acbodyfluidulate post totals by making inane comments. We call that post farming around here."

"Magellan cirbodyfluidnavigated the world."

"Under what cirbodyfluidstances do you feel you need to share such an anecdote?

The above went on for years before the forum software was changed. Silly fun while it lasted.

Cheers,

Other than Bird Flu, what other ironically-named illnesses are there?

👍

Edit: I guess "overreaction" in the title applies to more than ebay.

Saying I hate political correctness does not give you permission to be an d bag.

by saying things a certain way people are more then allowed to think less of you and voice it.

context is key. Example while shopping and saying those are some ugly crackers is totally OK. Posting that to social media while responding to someone posting racist content is another.

Is this not what the Brit’s mean by Christmas Crackers?
