Disclaimer: While I do dig the dial of this watch, the bracelet is obviously in shoddy condition. That said, is it worth $800 if I can get the fellow to come down?

I think you could do better. Take from a recent noob that it definitely takes patience and learning to make the right purchase. I would say avoid eBay and places like Chrono24 and take a look at the forums private sales. Lots of great examples go through there all the time. Firstly, well done for re-posting.
The linen dial looks fine but the case looks quite heavily polished.
The bracelet is stretched but you should concentrate on the watch head.

Right! I knew it looked fishy. And this seller is trying to tell me that the previous owner before him had it in a safe from 1969 until he bought it two years ago...

C- cases have particularly sharp edges with fine orbital brushing.
