Dog Leg Constellation case question

Hey all - I saw this Constellation offered for sale online (picture attached). This watch has obviously seen a lot of wearing in its life. It looks like it definitely needs a new crystal (and has a non-original crown). What I was wondering about, though, was the discoloration on the cases (seen around the crystal and at the base of the lugs). Does that look like corrosion or can these steel cases be cleaned up without resulting to polishing?

Barn find gunk which will clean up nicely with soap and water.

Dunno reference number, and its an auction, so unclear what it will sell for.

I would want to know the reference number before I bid. How else can you do the research to determine the range that the same reference sells for depending upon condition?

The crown not being original aside, this is a nice example and if I were in the market for a dog leg connie I would bid on this one.

You don’t get a better 👍 than @MSNWatch saying he would bid on it 😗

Serial number equates to 1963, no date pie pan dial, gold indices with onyx inlays, dog leg lugs, caliber 551 ... reference 167.005?

There's so little risk involved here that I wouldn't care. There are extremely little price variation between the dog-leg pie pan Constellation references; it's all about condition.

A very, very attractive Constellation only marred by the crown.

There is enough DNA from the prior owner on the watch that if the prior owner was a dinosaur, I could open Jurassic Park.

This was on the Goodwill auction site. I find watch auctions there very fascinating. I follow vintage Hamilton watches pretty closely, and they have a Hamilton Piping Rock for sale that has some issues that is already at almost $1,000 with 6 days left. For that price you're getting close to what a nicer example would run.

Yup... I tapped out at $1400 and was surprised to see how high it went. I *do* think it will look nice when cleaned up and with a new crystal, but even then I think it went for too much.
