Does the Itch Go Away?

Itches come and go, and some are stronger than others. As a collector there will always be something on your radar, and if an opportunity arises for something that you would love to personally own, and you can afford it, then why not add it to the collection.

That said I think it is often sweeter if you can wait. You get to enjoy the anticipation and with time you can root out passing fancies and focus in on what you really want. On that note be careful not to get swept up in social media hype. The power of influencers should not be underestimated.

Collecting is a journey, and what interests you now may not in a few years time as your tastes and preferences develop and you get deeper into it. My journey started a few years ago with a pre-owned no-date sub and at the time I had no ambition to own any other watches. 3 Speedies and at least half a dozen other "scratched itches" later...
I hear you. This purchase was tactical in that it’s ticks a few boxes I had and price was reasonable.

The plan is to sit back for a while now, with a view to purchasing a random one at a later point, which has peaked my interest, even though it’s the complete opposite of what I have recently been looking for. It’s actually the opposite of my usual taste but has grabbed my attention nonetheless.

The plan is as per your advice, in that the time passing will help me decide whether it’s a fleeting interest or whether I actually do want this one.

Cheers for taking the time to set that out so simply.

Ok, so I didn’t browse for a few days but glanced at one watch I like the look of, that’s cheaper than all the others I had fancied. Turns out it’s 50% off currently, so decided to grab it.

I know that it won’t be up there with my Omega, but that’s cool with me. It is Titanium body, Sapphire crystal and 70 hour power reserve.

Not everyone’s taste but I reckon it will look very nice on.
I think I have just proven something to myself. Ordered that last night and just had buyers remorse as think this is getting carried away with the deal and will end up not being worn a huge amount.

Duly cancelled and sticking to the previous advice about not getting caught up reading online reviews.

The only known cure is a Rolex.
Genuinely not fussed on Rolex tbh. I am sure there are a number that I would like the look of, but never actually bothered to do so as the brand appears to be the opposite of my personality.

The vintage ones aren’t the same as the new ones. I find loving old Rolex like loving a musician/band who’s work and ambitions were stellar 20-30 years ago and you have to separate that from their current image….think Bono from U2.

Really random that you should say that. I am a massive fan of U2 and been to a number of their concerts. The last one was my last though, for exactly that reason.

From a collector’s perspective, here are my 4

Each one represents the quintessential Rolex style IMO, each one with a slightly different intent. Sure I would love to add a 1603 DJ with slate dial, or a birthyear Red sub, perhaps even an early Daytona- but those aren’t happening and these scratch my itch for my Rolex collection.

All nice looking watches, fair play.

Because I am new to this, I am sticking with brand new watches being as though there are some many nice ones to be had. I have no nostalgia for older ones as not been into it long enough yet.

On that basis, Rolex is not on my radar.

To me the itch won't go anytime soon. But staying away from watch forums, online sites and IG does soothe it for a while.
But I'm here, so I obviously failed and it's itching again😀

You need to diversify your hobbies, I stop spending on expensive watches by buying knives and stop spending on knives by buying expensive watches.

Buy what you want, and what you will wear. Who cares what brand it is. I have Rolex and Omega. I wear the Omega 10X more than the Rolex for no other reason than I just like it more.

As a U2 fan, I know that feeling.

Doesn’t really matter what hobby or collecting you get into, it will never be enough. Only thing you can do is move your money around in collections and buy more stuff with what you sell

That’s kind of the ideal- being able to play without really tapping into the well continuously. I used to buy large lots of records and hi-fi gear, sell off what I didn’t want and keeping the best stuff, occasionally selling some of that into even better gear.
I finally got that point with watches in the last year or so where if I want something new, I can sell off a few pieces I haven’t bonded with and not be out much if any cash. But it takes time.

I got the itch to buy a watch earlier this year, I’d done a good job of avoiding it for a couple years. 6 watches in 7 months later….. I blame @dsio and the amazing work he’s done with the recommended watch thread 😉

For me the itch doesn’t go away but if I make a big purchase (FOIS last week) that itch will fade for a good while.

I guess my recommendation is to blow a ton of money on a single watch?

I mostly try to keep those entry level and under a grand so people who are out there looking to buy their first Omega can pick something decent up and avoid the noob tax on a black redialed Constellation, I think your itch will price you out of that bracket and into more pricey stuff quite rapidly in most cases 😉
