Hi.
By local I mean I live in Wigan and I own a pocket watch made by J Hargreaves of Wigan, so it is very local to me.
John Hargreaves is listed as a watch maker in the town.
The watch is in need of restoration.
Does anyone else collect locally made watches/pocket watches?
If I have put this in the wrong place, will one of the mods please move it.
Joe.

My copy of Brittens watch and clock makers (British makers, with a few European makers) lists over 28,000 watch and clock “makers”. By far the majority of these “makers” simply sold timepieces made by one of the few actual makers of watches. Your watch looks to me like a typical ebauche manufactured in Lancashire, and engraved with the retailer’s name. There is no listing in Brittens, Loomis, or Baillie, for a Hargreaves of Wigan. Perhaps one of our enthusiasts from Britain might shed some light on Hargreaves.

Being Canadian, the only watches made in Canada are Westclox Dax watches. Those of are no interest to me. However, I have numerous U S A made “private label” watches with the names of Canadian retailers on the dials. And one private label pocket watch labelled for a retailer in Liverpool.

There was a college in Toronto, Ontario (the Canadian Horological Institute) which operated from circa 1890, until about 1910. The only Canadian made watches (actually manufactured in Canada, made by college students) I am aware of, originated from that college. A friend of mine in Ottawa has two of these college watches.

In short, I have about half a dozen private label watches with Canadian retailer’s names on them. Unfortunately none of these were Canadian made. I quite like them.

Sadly, Oklahoma isn't known for producing watches or clocks or I would certainly collect them. The closest I have is an Illinois pocket watch that was owned by the Rock Island RR, and engraved as a loaner watch from the Chickasha, OK station about twenty-five miles from where I live.

Hi.
I'm sorry you didn't have any local watch makers.
Wigan at one time had around a dozen or more.
The town was well known not only for the coal mines (1300 shafts within 3 miles of the town) but also for it's watch makers and silver smiths.
I have another six or so movements by various Wigan watch makers but only the one full one with it's original case, the one by Hargreaves.
Joe.

But he and other Wigan watch makers are listed in, The Clockmakers & Watchmakers of Wigan 1650 - 1850 available on Amazon for £314!
